View Full Version : Cheap studio monitors

I'm looking for a good pair of studio monitors to go with a Digital
Performer setup. But I don't want to spend much money.

I'm looking at used Tannoy PBM 6.5 and Yamaha NS10m speakers on ebay.
Is there anything anybody recommends new?

M-Audio BX-8 or the Behringer Truths.

Go with the NS1O's if you are already thinking about those and later
on find a powered subwoofer and you will be good to go.

I'd definitely have something KEF on my "listen to list" - but of
course, they are already there ... some fairly old ones that is.

Kind regards

The Tannoy unpowered Reveals are pretty good and only about $300 new. ( or
three payments of $106.66 at www.americanmusical.com ) In some ways I like
them better than the PBM 6.5's and in some ways I don't. The Reveals will
reproduce lower frequencies and are maybe a tad crisper. The PBM's have
more midrange clarity. ( hmmm, maybe I should run both pairs at once! ;-)
On only one recording I listened to so far ( soundtrack to House Of Spirits
by Hans Zimmer . . .awesome disc by the way! ) the extended low end of the
Reveals was causing modulation of a trumpet passage during the huge concert
bass drum/timpani hits.

Best of luck!

I know absolutely nothing about them but just I saw an ad for Tapco brand
monitors that were designed by Mackie. About $300 for the active pair I
believe. I'd be interested to hear them considering the rep of Mackies own
monitors.

Forget the PBM 6.5 and go with the Tannoy Reveals (passive version).
They'll cost somewhere in between the PBM 6.5 and the NS10s but they
are much nicer than either of those. If you're looking on Ebay, the
Reveals are easy to find in "perfect" shape for $200. Get a decent
amp for another $300 and you're stylin'.
