Hello;

Anyone recommend a stereo mic/pre setup for tracking a small chamber
orchestra? Thanks in advance.

Two Royer 121's and a Great River MP-2. That's all you need.

I was going to suggest something very similar:
two Coles 4038 mics and 2ch of John Hardy preamps
but you haven't mentioned any price range / limit.
Both of these suggestions are in the $4k range, so if you have a
significantly lower limit, you'll need alternative suggestions. But no one
knows what price range you are dealing with.

What's your budget, what is the room like, and how have you generally
liked to stereo mike rooms in the past?

You can't go wrong with a pair of Millenia HV3B micpres, they are
ubiquitous in classical recording, about $1650. They extremely transparent and
quiet, very accurate and have a high speed transformerless design.

And the B&K / DPA 4006 are pretty standard if you want to do spaced omni
recording, but they're kinda pricey too.

I use either a MIllenia Media or the Great River for precisely this situation

Both are excellent.

Justin, I haven't used the 121--is there some reason you'd suggest it
in preference to the SF-1 (or the stereo model SF-12)?

Depending on the room : Mill Media HV3 preamp DPA 4004 (Omni) or 4012
(Cardoid) : depending what YOUR ears tell you : set ups ranging from
Spaced omnis to a Jecklin disc..

What kind of CO is it, just strings, are there woodwinds/brass, any
soloists : what kind of music.

What are You going to record on : analog or digital

You might try a pair of DPA 4003s or 4006s mounted on a Schneider Disk.

For a portable mic pre/A-to-D you might try our Mic2496.

Only that I happen to own a pair of 121s and so I know for a fact that
they kick ass, whereas I've never used an SF-1 or SF-12 myself so I can
only *assume* that they kick ass. But also, a pair of microphones
gives you a few more useful options beyond what you can do with a
stereo mic. And I don't just mean spaced pair techniques. Like, with
a pair of 121s you can mike a violin and a guitar amp simultaneously.
Which I have done. Or you could put one in front of a kick drum and
the other over the drummer's shoulder. But in a chamber context, maybe
the stereo mikes would be a better bargain since you hopefully will
never close-mike anything.
