I'm planning a small home studio, mainly to record my violin. So far,
I've decided on a sound card (Delta 1010), a mixer (Soundcraft FX8), and
preamps (built-in to FX8, possibly upgrading to outboard preamps later).
However, I haven't yet decided on a mic. I've done some research, and the
results are pretty consistant: small diaphragm condensers seem to be the
way to go. People seem to recommend the Neumann KM184, AT 4041, AT 4051,
SM81, etc. Now, I'd go for the Neumanns, but there's a catch: my budget's
only around $500. Almost enough to buy one KM184, but certainly not a
stereo pair (which is what I'm considering). I did some more research,
and found the Studio Projects C4. Within my budget, and the ability to
swap capsules is a plus. So, my question is: Is this a good idea? Or not?
If it's any help, the style of music is mainly jazz, with some classical
and bluegrass elements. The room would be a mid-sized, relatively open
space.
Thanks,
Collin
