View Full Version : Pan Law/Summing Buss Help

I've been testing out summing busses all day, some dedicated, some from analog
mixing consoles. My current dedicated box is the Folcrom by Roll Music. Since
this is an all passive summing unit, it has no pan law, ie, the audio level is
the same at the left and right as it is in the center. But I'm trying to
compare the summing of a Midas Venice which says it has a pan law of -3 in
center.
So to do this right, I assume that I will have to lower the software faders of
all things going out to a stereo section of the Venice (which is two mono
channels panned wide, I didn't use the stereo channels on the Venice) such as
wide guitars and effects returns, by exactly 3 db. Then I should get the exact
same levels as the dedicated summing box, correct? I'm going a little insane
here.

The pan law only has effect when signals are panned center. Hard left and
right panned signals are not affected by it.

You've been insane for years. Lower the damn output busses in SX by 3db that
are going to stereo, but you've already done this I assume and have realized
that you've wasted time by posting here. My cell phone has been ****ed all day
so I didn't get your message.

To be clear, the reason the Folcrom has no pan law is not because it's
passive. It's because it has no pan pots. Only L/C/R switches.

exactly, so when I was using the console for summing, all the channels that
went to the stereo configs I dropped by 3 db. I suppose I could have increased
the mono channels by 3, but it was easier the other way and it leveled out
perfectly. Thanks

>Why wouldn't you want the panning law to be in effect when summing?
Let me explain here. I summed the DAW mix to TWO seperate devices. The first
had no pan law. The second had a -3 at center. So I mixed first to the box
with no pan law and got a mix. Then I summed the mix through the second
summing buss which DID have a pan law, and obviously the levels were not right,
because the original mix was monitored through the non pan law device. So I
had to compensate. Thats all. Like my partner said, this was a needless post,
its a simple thing.
