Hey all,
I'm getting ready to take the plunge and forego my PC in favor of a Mac.
Before I do though I'd love to hear some opinions on the absolute must-have
options on a used G4 tower. Obviously things like minimum needs in MHz &
RAM would be appreciated but what are the less obvious things I shouldn't
live without? There ARE lots of options, aren't there? Thanks in advance!

Depends on what you're going to use it for.

You'll need a monitor a keyboard, and a pointing device of some kind.
Seriously, you need to spec out the machine based on the needs of the software
you'll be running.

I'll be using it with a Digi002 running Pro Tools almost exclusively. I'm
sure this has been covered here before. Any links ya'll know of?

Ask on the Digidesign Users Conference, which is here:
http://duc.digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi
They won't steer you wrong there. The best general advice is throw in as
much RAM as you can afford. 1 gig of RAM is not too much. Get an
uninterruptible power supply (UPS) if you can afford one; that way, you won't
ever risk your recordings during a brief power outage.
That, plus a decent monitor, lots of hard drive space, a good keyboard and a
good mouse should do the job.

You'll want a seperate drive for audio (internal, or external firewire).

I would get something over 700MHz i have a G4 powerbook 667mhz and i
like it fine so far. I would get a firewire HD to use with the 002. I
find that i get better track/plugin count with my setup. But often
times i just track with the built in drive and i can drop a punch in
with like 8+ tracks no problem. Then after move it over to my Lacie FW
400 drive. Works fine. RAM is good but CPU is better. Protools seems
for the most part happy with 512MB of RAM. So i would spend the extra
cash on a higher CPU. IMHO.
