Elliott Smith died yesterday, apparently from a self-inflicted stab wound.

Very sad news.

At the risk of sounding like a snob, I would hazard a guess that most
people posting to and reading rec.audio.pro don't have an Elliott
Smith record. Many may not even know who he was. He meant a lot to
me and I'm devastated today. I encourage everyone to check out his
work --- a super musical and gifted person. The real thing. An
actual artist.

Tragic.

I had the opportunity to record Elliott Smith and his band about two or
three years ago. I was very impressed with his songwriting and he was a
pretty good guitarist also. A very unique talent.

His "people skills" weren't so great. He came across as being very
depressed and his songs reflected that. It was pretty obvious that there
were some other "influences" involved so I wasn't surprised upon hearing
this news. A real shame.

Elliott Smith was a very gifted songwriter indeed. His work inspired me a
lot back when I used to play guitar more often, he had his own beautiful
style of making songs that were honest.

Elliott was also an avid fan of recording gear - about two years ago
he spent a ton of money to get a Trident A range board - he was a true
fan of vintage technology as well as music and you can see his
maturation from "crappy" home recordings to tracking "Figure 8" at
Abbey Road. BTW - that recording session was logged and photographed
in Tape Op a few years ago - If any one on R.A.P isn't familar with
him, "X/O" or "Figure 8" have great song writing and great fidelity.

I'm pretty stunned too - he was a gracious person, and an amazing
talent....
he has about 25 unreleased songs from his new studio - I wonder how
Dreamworks will handle that?

Rest In Peace,
Ian Swanke

Don't feel so bad. Until today, I'd never heard of him either.
