View Full Version : A good narration mic.

I am about to record some narration on just a single mono track.
I've never done this before and do not have a mic for this task (the only
mic's I have are small condensers for close mic-ing an instrument).
Could anyone suggest a decent mic for about $200. Or at least suggest what
you'd think is one of the better buys out there.
In general do you use a Dynamic, Condenser, or something else, for
voice/narration mic-ing?
Thanks.

IS,
A voice is an instrument. You'd want to close mic it. Which mics do you have?

Try a Studio Projects B1 mic. It is a large diaphram condensor mic
with a cardioid pickup pattern. It's a great general all purpose low
budget mic. I recently used mine on a bunch of narration recordings. I
had to record about ten different voices within a week or two. While
no single mic will sound great with every voice you put in front of
it, this mic proved very versatile. And even the voices that it wasn't
particularly flattering to, were easily remedied with some EQ.

Try the following dynamic mics: Shure SM7, Sennheiser MD421, ElectroVoice
RE20. You can find them used for just over $200.

Electro-Voice RE-20. I've bought them used for $200 on several
occasions. New they're a bit over $400. But it's the right tool for
the job.
If you can try out a whole bunch of different mikes before you buy, you
might find something else that compliments your voice. Maybe better,
or maybe cheaper. But the RE-20 is the most likely to work well on
every voice, and it's a standard.

Thanks. I'm going to look at the RE20 and Shure's SM7 sounds interesting
too.
I may get both to compare.
