View Full Version : Can anyone tell me what is the quality of BSS by Harmon signal processors?

This unit will be in a 90 to 100 degree F environment on 24 hours 7
days a week. In the past we have used Bi-Amp and ClearOne products. I
haven't heard of this subdivision of Harmon until today so any
information on longevity would be really helpful. Thanks. Chuck

BSS is the shortened form of Brooke-Siren Systems, a UK firm that made
good quality gear for years before they became a Harmon company. I don't
see any reason why it shouldn't be just as good now.
How's your humidity and ventilation?

The Omnidrive from a decade ago was great, and in the eighties they made some
decent PA gear, but I have not used the new stuff.
Pop the case, look at the temperature ratings on the electrolytics and who
made them. 105C caps from Wima are a good sign, 85C caps from Chinese
companies nobody has ever heard of are a bad sign.
In that environment what you are likely to encounter are mostly capacitors
going.

** Some reasons for concern include manufacture in China with mostly cheap SMD components and Pb free solder.
When BSS gear was made in the UK, components and assembly were of a high standard intended for long life in studio and other professional use.

Thanks Mike and Scott.
The ventilation isn't good but the humidity is low. A contractor is
installing this product so I will have no opportunity to look inside
the processor. Electrolytic caps and surface mount resistors and
capacitors were the most common faults in ClearOne XAP800s.
I hope Harmon hasn't lessened the quality. Chuck
