What are your thoughts? I have a small but reasonable mic collection that includes some of the following:

Neumann U87 (sixties version)
Neumann TLM67
Neumann KM184 Matched Pair
Beyer M160
EV RE20
EV RE15
EV RE18
EV RE55
EV 635A
Heil PR40 (2)
beyerdynamic M99
Shure Beta 87A (2)
Shure SM54
Shure SM57 (several)
Shure SM58 (several)
AKG D330
AKG D310S (2)
AKG D112 (2)
AKG D1000E
Sennheiser MD421U
Sennheiser MKH416
Audio Technica AT897
Audio Technica AT4053B
Audio Technica AT8031
Apex 460
More that I don't recall at the moment.

At this point, none of these mics is for sale. Each one was acquired for a particular reason. However, at this point,
I'm not doing any recording, and it doesn't look like recording is in my future, much to my dismay.

We had to clean out an elderly family couple's home recently to sell it. It was heart breaking to see the things that
were taken to Goodwill. There may have been some quite valuable things. However, there was not enough time or interest
to pursue that course of action. It is what it is.

When something happens to me, there is no one in my family or even in my inner circle who would have a clue about these
mics. It's not a valuable collection, but there is enough that taking them to a pawn shop or throwing them in a Dumpster
would be enough to bring me back from the grave.

I'm considering liquidating. People collect things all the time (trains, baseball cards, matchbooks, microphones) but
maybe I'm just wasting money holding onto these. Any helpful thoughts to help me reach a decision? I don't need the money.

Well, except for a few junkers, that's a pretty nice collection. Now is
the time to make your will and designate someone to receive all your
microphones. I'd be happy to be named in your will, or maybe there's a
recording school or a deserving studio that you know who would
appreciate them. I've done that for my musical instruments and what's in
my studio that isn't already ready for the junk yard. (mics, mostly)

Another thing you could do in your will is to designate that the
microphones be sold at auction and the proceeds donated to a charity of
your choice. Designate a seller so your estate executor doesn't hand
them to the same auction house that will handle your furniture, books,
and kitchen utensils.

On the other hand, if you're really not going to be using them, why not
sell them, putting them in the hands of people who will put them to good
use. Then you can take a cruise, buy a Lexus, or bank the money just in
case, and will that account to your favorite charity.

I'm with Mike. Either leave them to a deserving recording program, or liquidate and donate the proceeds to something like Music For Life.

Peace,
Paul

MCP..........

There is an excellent web based company specialising in selling old stock [and many times new stock] of sound and [mostly] video equipment ... www.techbid.co.uk/

I have bought from them ... and pleased with the products.

It may be a thought to sell and use the money for a silly holiday? Or donate the money, as others have said.

Make sure the U87 is clean, serviced and nice ... I hired one once for a client who insisted that his voice needed it ... yuck! The stench when I opened the case?
