View Full Version : How Mastering Engineers Disappoint Me

I always admired the song, Radar Love, by Golden Earring, about 1973.
When I found that song as multi-tracks, my jaw dropped to the floor hearing the clarity of drumming! On this remixed rendition, it's far from what it could be, quality wise, because material is premixed to (3) or (4) stereo tracks. Lead Vocals suffer, for example.
What is missing? It SOUNDS like the "hit", but some added (minor) vocal work is missing. I have to assume, once they mixed down the stereo master, they used that to overdub those missing vocals, degrading audio quality!! This is nothing new, many "engineers" would add and add more and more sound to existing mixed tapes, to a point the album version didn't match the hit version!!
You'll notice no fade-in guitar work as with the hit. The horns stand-out, tambourine nice and clear, love the high-hat and cymbals sound. So quiet, you can even hear the guitarist getting ready to overdub his guitar work!!

Why I feel man should return to where he began, and remix tracks for the ultimate in sound quality, not some overdubbed, spent, master tape!!
Thank you for agreeing!

Umm.... I can't help but think you are joking here if you believe that vocals
were added in the mastering session.
I think it's pretty clear that whatever master tracks or stems you have got
your hands on are incomplete.

How in the world can one properly call oneself a Mastering Engineer if
one is unable to add a little thing like a vocal during this so-called
"mastering" process?

Easy! That can be done by pitch correcting the vocals that are being added
during mastering. ;-D
Imagine the look of pleasure on the artists' faces when they hear the
result!

Oh, but you would agree that Thin Lizzy's, "Jailbreak" song was missing the siren sounds on the multi-tracks. Gee, Scott, I wonder how they were added!!??
Don't mess Scott!!! :-)

I know! Aliens from planet Zargon came and dubbed them in! It could have
happened! It's no less likely than the crazy stuff you're suggesting.

I do a lot of independent research on my own. I put two and two together. Find factual evidence! Even acclaimed attorney told me collectors are the best source for information! Anyway, they remixed that Thin Lizzy CD-album. That is where it is stated that the sirens were missing! Thin' obviously holds their session tapes and probably passed-down from lead Singer to guitarist, who felt his guitar was out of tune (The Boys Are Back In Town), so he replaced it, decades later, on the multi-tracks. Not that it is very noticeable, just strange to find it occurring. Take that, Scotty!

And you have copies of the original multitracks ? Not some silly
extracted game versions. And you know you have ALL the source tracks ?

I have
shifted up your pitch

a bigger number and
more is better!
Thank me
