It was very nice to be able to thank Shel Talmy (producer) for his Who stereo mixes!
Maybe some can spot a "hit" before others. I'm not thrilled with "today's" music, but when I first heard "Pumped Up Kicks" (2011?), by Foster The People, I knew it was going to do well!! Had and eerie sound about it!
Also, it is/was a thrill to chat with Jim Liddane, elsewhere. I'd ask Jim a one sentence song question, and would receive a novel size reply!..

Jack ....
Shel Talmy .... I can thank Shel for my band's first hit! Also for allowing me to learn so much from him ... a lovely guy and, I hope, a dear friend through the years.
Strangely, i am told, he was not very enamoured with the work he did with us ... maybe untrue? To me it was sheer genius. Dec

Dec,
The drummer of The Fifth Estate who had a [1967] US hit with, "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead", sent me a copy of a current Fifth Estate album, for review. Guess who Produced it? Yep, Shel!! Small world, eh? :)
Cheers/Best,
Jack

Jack ... the last time I was in contact with Shel he was virtually blind ... his sight was always bad ... he was then still producing even with no sight... Dec PS. I hope he is still around ... I owe him a lot.

Wow, Dec, that IS sad news. I only wrote/shared some words with him in e-mails a couple years ago [related to his Who stereo mixes], but others tell me he's a sweet person!!
Thank you for letting me know!
Best,
Jack

Dec, some years back I found a favorite Kinks song (You Really Got Me), but in stereo. Have to assume Shel mixed it, Ray Davies didn't like it, so Shel sent it to pasture.
Also, I was sent a CD by the drummer of 60's group, The Fifth Estate. It was a new album/CD. Later, while reminiscing, I noticed Shel Produced it!

Jack .... yes, Shel is/was an exceptionally nice guy and I owe him a lot .... he promotes himself mostly on his work on The Who and The Kinks ... yet he made a nice packet from my band ... and never mentions it in public... strange? [grin!]. He said one of the funniest lines I have ever heard when I asked him did he ever see his erstwhile partner, Mike Stone. His reply of "f**k him and the horse he rode into town on" still makes me smile all over!!!!!!! Funny line.
