View Full Version : Ipod Microphone

I keep waiting for Apple to come out with the microphone attachment I
keep hearing about before I buy an Ipod. I hope that this isn't the
end of that story.

Has anyone heard anything about it? I'd do with a 1/8" stereo jack,
to sub for my old minidisc.

By the accounts I've heard, the iPOD can only record in mono at low bit
rates. It's not a replacement for your MiniDisc recorder, much less a
multi-track, high resolution LPCM recorder.

I was hoping for more as well. That's looks like all we're going to
get for now. Seems like there is a lot more potential.

To finish the story - if you want a relatively low cost, highly portable
high quality hard-drive based recorder, think Nomad Jukebox 3 or competitive
product.

Then you heard wrong! Or, more likely, you are just bashing a
potential competitor! Looking at the specs for the iPod codec at the
wolfsonmicro website (it is model W8731), you can see that it is rated
for up to the same 24/96 of the "multi-track, high resolution LPCM"
that Len Moskowitz frequently advertises on Usenet!
Also, to be fair, Len Moskowitz advertised his "high resolution"
solution here LONG before it was available (or is it available?) and
left a trail of messages saying that he would announce something "in a
couple of weeks" that took perhaps a year to unveil! So I think to be
fair, Len should refrain from bashing iPod if they have not yet
provided a high-res mic to access this feature which became available
last week!
The low bit rates available to the Belkin mic are a function of what
Belkin wanted to / could deliver, not a reflection of the iPod's
capability. It is easy to find out that the iPod is internally
capable of much more. A microphone for recording, say, music lessons
only requires a license from Apple and the instructions to switch the
codec into another mode, such as 24/96. Such a package could
potentially be an elegant, less expensive alternative to the Len
Moskowitz device.
I don't object to all of Moskowitz's advertising here (although he
does it a LOT), but this bashing of the iPod is really low. iPod only
this week released firmware to support recording: they may still bring
a high-res product to market much faster than Moskowitz---if you count
date of public promise until he delivered (if he has actually
delivered).

Agreed. MUCH MORE. Apple just likes to milk it. New uses and
features will keep coming. It's a hard drive, it could be used for
anything.

By the time you add a good quality mic pre/A-to-D it's not low cost.

My apologies: I was repeating the information that was recently posted
on the laptop-recording mailing list.
I'd welcome an iPOD that could really record at 24/96 with the kind of
noise and distortion specs we expect from that format, and also accept a
digital audio input. Had the iPOD provided that, we wouldn't have
bothered developing PDAudio.
Unfortunately I don't expect Apple or any mass market company to ever
provide that kind of performance until the music recording and
distribution industry overcomes its fear of consumer recording and
copying.

Agreed, but that's true for any digital recorder with line-level or digital
inputs.
I think that the costs are exasperated by the fact that most products are
not really high-volume mass-produced.
