did the 4040 replace the 4033 and just have a new name? Just to make this
clear, I am talking about Audio Technica mics. 8*)

No, they're not really even very similar. The 4040 is a large diaphragm
"true" condenser, while the 4033 is a medium diaphragm electret
condenser. Also, the 4033 has more self-noise than the 4040, at least
according to the specs. There are probably other significant
differences, but I haven't heard the 4040 so I can't comment. Their
respective spec sheets suggest a rather different response curve.

You must be thinking of the other small diaphram condensers in the AT line.

Personally, I like AT small and large diaphram condensers, but for the money
I lean towards Rode.
