Supposin', just supposin, I were to use the setup proposed by Rich
Davidian (offline). Which preamp would you use going into a Fostex
8-track VM200 then to hard disk:
What I have:
Symetrix 202 - older(/) one with the three output jacks
Symetrix 202 - with the five output jacks
Grace 101
RNP
Also a Countryman DI and a Rolls DI
There are 4 pres on the Fostex which could be used though I don't know
why I would.
I could also borrow a Peavey VMP-1.
The proposed set up:
SM-81 stereo pair X-Y in front/over the whole big band
AKG 414 looking down over mid-upper strings in piano (lid at
half-stick?) Or DI the electric keys
DI the bass. Or - a 4050 cardioid on the amp
DI the guitar. OR - RE20 on the guitar amp
4050 hyper-card 3ft. up over the drum kit where the snare and HH
meet...looking down (nearest horns in the null.)
Direct feed of the vocalist mic to the recorder and one more track of
a PA send to get the soloists OR
M-160 out front of the lead trumpet (and his neighbors?)
My initial thoughts would be use the RNP on the stereo pair, the Grace
on the M-160, and the Symetrixes (Symetrices?) on the other mics. The
Countryman would go on the bass.
For those who did not read the earlier thread, this is to be a live
recording of a big band in a lousy shoebox converted storefront, over
which I suspect I will have little control of the situation. I have
plenty of ideas a options about how I will end up actually doing it.
This is Just a question about matching mics and pres.
Thanks again for your thoughts.
