This is the sax player.

I'm thinking I should wait until I've been
paid before I honestly critique his performance!

Haha!

Do not go there at all, not even after you've been paid, unless you are
being paid to be the producer.

I am not kidding.

Think up the most self-effacing rejection _of your own ability to judge_
and leave it right here, cheerfully.

"Wow, I can honestly say I've never heard a sound like that come from a
horn before."

Probably a good idea. Unless I honestly thought he was damn
good!

If you don't have anything nice to say.....

Following Scott's lead - "I was astonished by your playing!!"

onward.

What Hank said -- tell him you're really not qualified to comment on saxophone. Even if you like what he's doing, by commenting on the playing you're telling him you *are* qualified to comment, and he'll ask you again on a day he flubbed it. Don't go there, don't go anywhere near there, unless you have a signed contract as producer. And a deposit.

Peace,
Paul

Salieri: Mozart, it was good of you to come!
Mozart: How could I not?
Salieri: How... Did my work please you?
Mozart: [hesitantly] I never knew that music like that was possible!
Salieri: [uncertainly] You flatter me.
Mozart: No, no! One hears such sounds, and what can one say but...
"Salieri."

I'd have to agree with what most everyone else advises---do your best to avoid offering any sort of critical comments to performers.

I engineer a radio program that features a lot of live in-studio performances. After the show, I'm often asked stuff like "how do you think that went?" Or also "how'd I do?"

My answer is always the same. I'll say "sounded fine to me, but I'm really focused on how everything sounds & not paying so much attention to the performance."

Sure....a little white lie, but most seem happy with that answer.
