No, no, not you! The Cascade Fathead ribbon mics.

Can anyone from experience compare the Fathead and Fathead II? There
isn't much difference in the price, though the II seems to come in colors.

There's one of their every couple of months overstock/b-stock sales now
and I've been thinking of picking up one or two of these with the
standard transformers. I've had occasion to use one a couple of times
though I'm not sure which of the two models it was, and it worked well
enough to make me think that I should have one.

I'm not particularly interested in using a pair for stereo, so I might
just get one of each, but other than the size of the shaft, the
published specs look essentially the same and the FAQ says they're
sonically the same, with the II having a "premium" shock mount and the
bigger body to accommodate it. Is the better shock mount necessary for
normal studio work?

I cannot. But I can from experience say that no two of the Fatheads sound
exactly the same. This may be a case of tensioning the ribbon, or it may
be ribbon or motor manufacture. So don't sweat it, buy two of whatever is
on sale and return one of them. Keep the one with the better null.

The original Fathead shockmount did not work all that well; it is a
comparatively heavy microphone. So I would not be surprised if the new
one was an improvement.
