At the local theater where I'm doing the occasional live sound gig, we're looking to
have the lighting computer control the Yamaha digital mixer, via MIDI. (The primary
application will be to have the lighting cues change scenes in the sound console.
This is only for the really complex stage shows; won't be done on a regular basis.)
Seems like we have the pieces on both sides to do this; but no one in the shop
speaks MIDI, at all!
Anyone done this kind of thing on a regular basis? Any recommended reading?
Thanks in advance,
Frank

The pieces that you need are the user manuals for both units. MIDI isn't all
that complicated. However, finding out how to set your codes in the lighting
controller and/or receiving scene change instructions in the mixer is very
unlikely to be covered in general MIDI documentation.

A quick look at the Yamaha LS9 user manual:
http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/pa/english/mixers/ls9_en_om_d0.pdf
Page 180 onwards describes how external MIDI program changes can select any
scene and Effect library.
It looks pretty straightforward, just as you might make a MIDI sound module
change patches from a Mother Keyboard or DAW.
I should imagine most other Yamaha mixers with MIDI will be able to do the
same thing.
Cheers,
Gareth.

Neil is spot on here, Frank. General MIDI documentation gives one an
understanding of the protocol, but it tells nothing about the user
interface implementing that protocol in any given unit.

All you really need is a half decent Keyboard player to set it up, this is
what they do.
Cheers,
Gareth.

Thanks, all, for your replies. (So all we need is a hungry keyboard player and we're
good? Excellent! I know at least two of those. <g>)
