View Full Version : MOTU 4 pre?

I am thinking a MOTU 4PRE would meet my needs using the USB interface.

Anyone have experience with it?

I have an older Ultralight with a broken display. I am thinking the
4pre display would be more reliable as it has a different type of
display. I no longer have a fw equipped computer and my Ultralight
seems to have strayed away and now resides at a friend's studio.

I am thinking of staying with Motu for the cuemix. Not sure how well it
works with 4pre win8 & usb.

It would help to know what you're recording. Mostly from microphones or mostly MIDI? Do you often record more than two tracks at once, or do you mostly cut one track at a time?

Tell us more, please!

Peace,
Paul

Hi Paul

I play guitar and sing. I often record vocal and guitar at the same
time. I have some of the Guitar Center vocal and instrument (Sterling
Audio) mics and also Shure Beta series vocal and instrument dynamic
mics. (I find often use the Shure dynamic mics for recording as I think
they give me a better feel for what the live mix will be like.) For the
most part I primarily use it for laying down a few tracks. I send them
off to a friend who sends me a bass track back to practice with.
Generally do not try for Studio quality records. I am hoping to find
something that meets my needs that would stay at home. (No midi work
planned)

This is my *very* subjective opinion, so take with a lot of salt...

I have been very disappointed with Motu's half-hearted support for Windows
platforms. They give me the impression of a vendor that only supports
Windows as much as they have to, but their real focus is in the Mac world.
When I retire my current Motu PCI hardware, I doubt that I will replace it
with more Motu for that simple reason. If you're not a Windows user then
please disregard.

Just my personal opinion,

Sean

Perhaps some of the newer interfaces from Presonus might do the job well. They come bundled with Presonus's new DAW software, which a lot of people I respect like a lot.

Peace,
Paul

+1

I have to say that they were pretty good about replacing my long out-of-
warranty blown 828 MkII for $99. I'll give them a _little_ credit, because
they could have at least changed out the 4 rusted hex fasteners on the
front panel. That's ok, I have a Fastenal close by.

PCI has kinda gone it's way, anyhoo. USB2/3 is here to stay. I still
have a PCI card, but it goes a lot unused.
