View Full Version : Pro Tools and OMF

I'm starting a mix session next week for the first of 13 episodes in a cable TV
series. The editor is working on a Media 100 844x (PC) and I'm usin Pro Tools
HD. The editor has done some *very* limited work on the sudio- mostly editing
out stuff she doesn't want to hear. She wants to send me the tracks exported
as OMF. Is there a way import them into Pro Tools without using Dig
Translator? I don't own it, and while I would happily buy it, no one (Digi
Store included) has it in stock. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe Egan

EDL Convert Pro might do it. Not sure though.

"OMF Tool", included with Pro Tools (or as a free download) will convert 16 bit
OMF files to basic Pro Tools sessions (regions named and placed correctly in
time, and not much else). It won't work with 24 bit, or export from PT to OMF
though.

Hi Joe,
you can use "OMF Tool" which is a free download (I think) on the Digi site.
However, it's a one-way transfer product: OMF to PT only, no PT to OMF.
Good luck,

Are you sure that the M100 will export OMFs? The systems I've worked
with would not.
If they CAN now then that is a great thing. Yes, you can try to
import an OMF w/o DigiTranslator, via the OMF tools downloadable from
the Digi site. They used to work fine, mostly, but as the spec of the
carious video editing systems moved on they work less and less of the
time. This is why Digitranslator (1) was made--for 16 bit sessions it
generally works very well. For a PT HD I think you'll need to get
the DT2 add-on, which basically just unlocks the DT2 that is already
in your software. Yes, it's kind of expensive, but it is the only
reliable way to take in OMFs, especially if they are coming from a
non-Avid system. You've got a big job going there--save yourself the
trouble and bite the bullet for DT2. (If you are on OS X I'm pretty
sure that the OMF Tools won't work anyhow.) Digi Customer Support
couldn't help you? You could try Cutting Edge Audio here in SF, they
are very helpful and sell a lot of PT systems: 415-487-2323.

A buddy of mine did that very thing to get him through what may be the only
project he needed it for.

Also, OMFTool 2.0.7x2 is the only version I've used that worked, and it
only works on Type 1 omf files with embedded audio media, and NO video.
Anything else didn't seem to work.
