I have one of these units that I rarely use.
I brought it off the shelf because I wanted
more input channels than my other interface
has. I plugged a couple of mics into the
front preamps, and adjusted the levels all
the way up. I strummed my guitar and immediately
clipped. I brought the levels down just a bit
and found that there was a huge gap between
all the way up and the next level down that I
was able to achieve. Making a sound with my
guitar that would just clip, I rotated the knob
as slowly as I could, and the meters jumped
at one point immediately to -12dB. They are
smooth all the way down after that. What a
shame that there is that hole there, where
I'd really like to adjust them.
The thought crossed my mind that since I
bought this unit used years ago, it may be
that the sweet spot where most people would
want to record may have been damaged on
the gain pots. Still, both behave exactly
the same, and there is no noise introduced.
I think the preamps sound better than on
my Mackie 1402 VLZ-Pro, but I haven't done
an A/B yet so it may be wishful thinking.
