View Full Version : Mid/side configuration in one unit?

I didn't see much in an internet search. I was
wondering whether someone is making a decent single
mic unit that embodies the Mid/Side configuration.
Thanks,

Some of them. Neumann makes one, so does Sanken. Schoeps doesn't make one
but they make a bracket that lets you pop two mikes together so they act
like one. Nevaton might still make one.
They are rarer than coincident cardioid stereomikes because figure-8 condenser
capsules are difficult to make well.

What's that stereo LDC Mike Rivers has? From Studio Projects.

Can you do M/S with that?

Yes. It works well.

The one Schoeps made was great, strange that they stopped.
Kind regards

Nevaton might still make one.

What did they make? The closest I know of was the WSR MS LU with the CCM
mikes.

Ah,yes, forgot that the question was about a MS mic, they made a coincident
dual capsule mic - possibly cardioid only, fairly large - one inch body as I
recall it.
I borrowed one to test it for a friend in 1976 or so and made a demo
recording of a big band with it. The actual mic did however have a problem:
the capsules were aged and rolled off above 8 kHz. I think I still have the
tape, but it was recorded on Ampex 407 and it may have disintegrated beyond
rescue.

Was that with the nickel diaphragm capsules?
They do still make a coincident cardioid mike thing, which works very well,
and of course they make the Sphere which I think is very close in operation
to the Jecklin disc, just more expensive.

I don't know, what I know is that it was 8 years old at the time, 1977 +/-
one year, i.e. from around 1970.
