Help with 01v96i- Midi

Just purchased a Yamaha 01v96i for recording and now Yamaha support tells me that midi only supports Thru in... not out- In other words, I can pass an external keyboard midi stream into cubase (via USB), but can't get cubase to play the keyboard via midi-

Can anyone confirm if this is true or if there is a work around?
