View Full Version : Guy selling speakers out of a white van
Tobiah

Ok, we all know the scam there. But today, a young man came to
my door (pretty nice house) and briefly explained that he worked
for so and so meat purveyors, and this other dude was sitting in
the truck which had some logo on the side. He briefly stumbled
over some bit with a casual smile about how there were extras for
some reason and I could get a super steal on some steak or fish.
I didn't make the connection at the time, but later I thought
about the white van speaker guys. I decided that it was exactly
the same ploy.

Actually pretty common for meat, because it's usually not traceable back to
whomever they stole it from. I get someone like this once a year or so.

Wonder if someday a semi truck and trailer rig will pull into a mall
parking lot, and start selling "extra" white vans?

The difference is that speakers can't give you food poisoning. Even the crummy speakers sold out of white vans.

Ah, but the cabinets might be made of illegal wood and can get you

Assuming one does not eat the speakers.

My former brother-in-law actually fell for the speaker scam (in Chicago). He should have known better...but hadn't lived in the city all that long.
And yes--he bought them out of the back of a van.
<grin>
Mike
I fell for the speakers out of the van trick and when I got home I
realized after plugging them up that i had been bamboozled.
Right then a buddy of mine who went to all of my gigs walked in and took
one look at them and desperately wanted to buy them from me even after I
made him listen to them, so I sold them at cost.
He was so proud of those good looking spaeakers.

This happened to me over 15 years ago -- in an Office Depot parking lot. I
have a youthful face, and many people see "sucker" written on my forehead. I
knew their game, and told them I owned Apogee Divas (which they'd never heard
of). When I told them the retail price of these speakers, the leader of the
pack grew extremely angry -- "You could buy a good used car for that!".

Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers.
You get more mileage from the white van speakers.

Bad speakers from a clean white Econoline van. (If you're stomping on
the avenue with a large sum of money to spend.)

Until you mentioned it, no it didn't occur to me.
As for "all questions of eqo aside," there's no
way that applies to you. But now that I've given
it a few moments of thought, you're lame ratioanlization
doesn't hold water.
It's not very likely that your bragadoccio would
humiliate anyone. The only one that should be
humiliated would be you, but you don't have that
level of self-awareness. No, it's cleat that you
just took the opportunity to brag. And to someone
that really couldn't give a **** how much your
speakers cost (that probably would apply to most
people that read this newsgroup, as well as anyone
else to whom you've uttered this bloatarian boast).
Nope, my first impression was the best, and it's
backed up by your history here. Pointless self-
serving bragging. Certainly intended to masturbate
your own ego, possibly successfully; and clearly
intended to make others thing better of you, a
certain failure. You're probably too old and
thick-headed to ever get that message through
your granite skull.
Thanks for the laugh, li'l buddy.

I wonder about that, too. But, I wonder more about the need to dish out
"some well deserved humiliation." When one dishes out humiliation it is
not done for the benefit of the dishee; it is done for the benefit of the
disher. I've done it myself, and I've always felt a little dirty, a
little ashamed afterwards. "None", is of course correct. None of this

In this case, no.
These are people selling stolen merchandise and/or grossly misrepresenting
what they sell. I'm supposed to respect them and ignore what they're doing?
If I have the opportunity to embarrass or humiliate them -- why shouldn't I?
Please don't tell me that I'm doing something "wrong" or inhumane. Because I'm
not.

My understanding of the standard scam is that it's misrepresenting,
but not stolen. That accusation is, I believe, just baseless
speculation.
> I'm supposed to respect them and ignore what they're doing?
I don't think anyone suggested that.
> If I have the opportunity to embarrass or humiliate them -- why
> shouldn't I?
Because it's despicable behaviour, as is their dishonest scam.
Two wrongs make a right? It's demeaning to you, although you
don't seem to care about your own reputation, and it has no effect
on them, which you also don't seem to care about.
> Please don't tell me that I'm doing something "wrong" or inhumane.

I never suggest "inhumane", and I don't thing anyone else did.
Have you defeated all the strawmen that you created now?
You have done nothing which would humiliate or in any way
discourage them. Surely they thought you wera a pompous
****head, and then promptly forgot you and tried to sell to
someone else. I guess you consider that some kind of
victory. Maybe you're such a loser that this was actually
a positive turn in your life.
But you're being a jerk for your own amusement, NOBODY else
suffers for it; not them, they aren't impressed with your bragging;
and apparently not anyone here, who clearly aren't impressed with
your bragging about the cost of your speakers, and aren't impressed
with your bragging about your bragging either.
You're making a proud display of being a dickhead. You could have
just walked away, but you chose instead to be an asshole, hurting
nobody but yourself, although you don't really seem to give a ****
about your reputation as an asshole. You seem to be proud of being
an asshole. And then you whine when people wont' hire you.
Granite-skulled and clueless, and proud of it. Once again,

"respect" for their tender feelings?

I assume that should someone break into your house, you'll compliment them on
their haircut or nice clothes, right?
A person who snipes from hiding, simply to abuse people because he has nothing
better to do with his time and can get away with it, has NO RIGHT to criticize
anyone else's behavior. NO RIGHT, you crummy, sniveling coward.

Oh, but they were "impressed" -- impressed enough to get very angry.
Why do you think people who do "bad" things are immune from public criticism?
> You're making a proud display of being a dickhead.
I sure am proud of it. Someone is being a dickhead for attacking people trying
to rip off people? Come on, now.

So gratuitous boasting about the cost of your

It worked! The guy got really upset.
It wasn't completely gratuitous. These guys were boasting about how great and
how expensive (in terms of the claimed list price) these speakers. I simply

Your own imagination at work.

I neither stated nor implied anything about respecting
them, and certainly nothing about anyone's "tender

maybe you'd show some respect for yourself, but
apparently that ship has sailed.
Ignoring their behavior is simply ignoring their

Why would you assume that? Because you already make

but that's nothing new.

I have as much right as anyone else to criticize you

But you didn't attack them. You tried to inflate their

You can attempt to put words in my mouth, but if
I never said them, and I never meant them, they won't
stick. It has nothing to do with what I said or meant.
It has a lot to do with your fertile imagination, fertilize

I really don't give a **** about your speakers. It's amazing
that you think reciting the details of your compensation
for your insecurity about your manhood means anything

I don't know what your budget is, but Martin-Logan makes terrific
hybrid-electrostatic speakers for a reasonable price. They can't play as loud
as cone speakers in the same price range, but they are /good/.

You can probably find them cheaper elsewhere (eg, Audio Advisor), and there
are slightly smaller models. Love the model name -- Theos. (By the way, one
translation of Kal-El from Hebrew is "the voice of God").

I've never noticed any -- but I haven't watched much TV on it.
On the other hand... If I'm watching a Blu-ray and step right in front of the
screen, I can see the MPEG artifacts, which look very much JPEG artifacts
(such as "halos" around transition regions). A foot or two farther away, and
they disappear.

The fish van scam reminded the OP; (Tobiah), of white van speaker man.
I had a similar experience but it was a memory foam mattress which had
been ordered by a supposed neighbour who could not be found and the
nice chap was willing to sell it to me for only £800 as for some
spurious reason he could not take it back to the depot, I refused his
kind offer.
