What desk pre's were the Beats using at the end? Compressors? Were
any vocal effects (other than doubling) used by them on Abbey Road? Did they
all use U47's?

I was there when they did a lot of "Abbey Road" (check out the story
at www.aerovons.com which is a temporary site until the real one gets
up in about a month).
As usual, most of it was done in Studio 2 which had a custom made EMI
console. Have no idea what was in it. The tape machine was a 3M 8
track. They monitored on Tannoys (in Lockwood cabinets) and actually,
though U47s were around, you saw a lot of U67s and U87s in use, as
well as KM54s. They used Altec and Fairchild compressors. No real rack
of special effects, just tape slap. Great songwriting and performances
help a bunch. ;)
