View Full Version : resistors for Oktava mic mod???

Digikey doesn't carry 1gig resistors so I'm looking for another vendor but,
as a novice, I'm having a hard time finding them. Any ideas?

Hi yo Silver!
So much for being anon. I'm dyin' here. I've got everything else for the mod
except these resistors and am chomping at the bit to get started. I'm also
interested in knowing the exact ratings on the various components.

Sure they do. You just have to know where to look. The part you want
is MOX200J-1000M-ND but they're out of stock, so you can go with
MOX200F-1000M-ND which is the same thing but it's a tighter tolerance
part: 1% instead of 5%. That's good, except it means each resistor
costs $14.63. There are some other options, such as using a 1/2-watt
part instead of 1/4-watt.
Have a look at page 813 of the current Digikey catalog. Or, go to
Digikey's web site and do a search for "MOX" and you'll get a
parametric selection tool to choose between 47 differen high-value
resistors.
It would be nice if the $3.68 part was in stock, but since it's not you
make do with something else. I would stick with the 1000M (1G) ohm
part. Tolerance isn't critical, but better costs more. Higher-wattage
parts are fine except they may not physically fit in the space alotted.
It looks like anything between 0.25W and 1.5W will be approximately the
same diameter, but the length ranges from 0.3" to 1.27" so measure the
space you have in the microphone case and see what part you can use.
Order the cheapest 1000M part that is in stock and will fit in the
space available.

They carry them, they are just backordered for a while. You can try fitting
the 1/2 watt ones in there but it's tight.
The next alternative requires ordering three or four thousand dollars worth
at a time.
It seems a lot of people have been reading the Oktava article and there is
a run on the things. Digi-Key normally only stocks a small number.

I don't suppose you would be intetrested in putting together complete kits ?
How many people, at say $25 per mic ?

No, because all of the parts except the FET are already available from
Digi-Key. And because of the production inconsistencies, you may or may
not need all of the parts anyway; some of the mikes already come with Philips
capacitors rather than those awful Ulyanov things, and it's not worth spending
more money for replacement Philips caps you don't need, for instance.

Could someone point me in the direction of this article. I´ve no idea
what it´s about, but I´m always ready to improve on my gear. I use
various Octave mics, so I suppose this article will be of interest.

Last month's "Recording" Magazine (USA).
I wish I had bought some of those half-price 012s at Guitar Center!

Scott's mods won't do zilch for crappy capsules though ...

Speaking of the FET. I can't find the one specified in the article but one
of the techs at DigiKey suggested the following:
1 ic trans n-ch gp 10MA TO-92
Here's what I have so far:
1 res: thick film 1000 ohm .25w 1% (yikes, that cost a lot)
2 caps: 470pf 500v mica radial
2 caps: 820pf 500v mica radial
Don't know which voltage rating to use out of the following 1uf tantalum 10%
radial caps so I got 2 of each:
20v
25v
30v
Anything missing other than the specified FET??? I'm dyin' to get started.

Seems like such a low cost fix. Why the heck wouldn't (didn't) the Oktava
folks do it right in the first place?
Then too, seems you've come up with quit a few of these tweaks, Scott. What
the heck is up with that... ? <G>

It would more than double the parts cost of the mike. Remember that $25
worth of parts means $250 or so more retail cost.

I need the money.

Do It Yourself: Upgrade Your Oktava 012 Microphone
Recording, Vol. 16, No. 12 (Sept 2003)
You should be able to order the back issue at www.recordingmag.com.
I think it's pretty good overall, and I hope to have a follow-on about
the 219 and 319 mikes at some point.

Scott was kind enough to e-mail me and I said I'd post his response
regarding the FET that DigiKey said "might" work, part number 2N5457:
BEGIN QUOTE
-----------------
2N5457 is sort of the lowest common denominator switching FET. It's sort
of the 2N2222 of FETs. Definitely way, way too much input leakage and
capacitance for a mike front end, also no two have the same gain.
They're actually not bad for the front ends of DI boxes if you select
them for gain, though.
I can still sell you Toshiba FETs at drastically inflated prices if you
come up dry.
--scott
---------------
END QUOTE.
As always Scott comes through in the clutch, I'm sure I won't be the only
one who can use this info. Thanks again, Scott. You are the man.
