View Full Version : 2 singers into the 2 channels of a stereo compressor?

I've never tried it but I'm thinking of running 2 vocalists into the 2
channels of a stereo compressor. This would be a cheap way to handle 2
singers who rarely sing at the same time. I'm thinking an RNC or such.

Is this for live use? You may find the unused (but still open) mic has
enough spill to affect the compression of other channel.
Could work though.
I generally use multiple cheap-ass alesis or beringer comps for this...
The beringer stuff is ok for PA work.

The RNC is stereo and not dual-mono. This means the two vocalists will
"duck" each other. The correct solution is to buy two RNCs. That's
why they're so ridiculously cheap. The RNC is way less expensive than
any quality piece of recording gear has any business being. Buy two.

As long as you can make the stereo into dual mono by de-coupling them with a
switch you'll be fine. If it's stereo only, forget it. One person's voice
will kick in the compresser for the other person's voice (whoever is the
stronger singer).

You probably don't want to comrpess two voices with one compressor, as a
peak on one side will also reduce the level on the linked side. Use a
dual-mono comp, like the Drawmer DL241, for example, where you can
control the channels independently. Since the RNC is stereo, and cannot
run dual-mono mode, you'd need two of them, but that also would be a
fine option for this.
