View Full Version : Wanted: Used patch bay: brands, connections, vendors?

I need a 1/4" TRS long frame patchbay. In accord with advice I've seen
in this group, I want to buy a used commercial-grade bay. Since I
don't know exactly how I'm going to wire it up, I want one with
normals out to connectors.

What brands to look for, or stay away from. I see lots of ADC on Ebay.
Good/Bad?

What kind of connections do the pros like: punch-down,
spring-connectors, soldering, or what? I want to use the technique
that produces the best connection. I can solder with the best of them,
so that's no problem.

Can you reccommend reliable vendors online (or in NYC, so I can walk
in and look)?

Application:
I'll use the patchbay to route line-level sources to a pair of ATC
SCM10-2 powered speakers. I read in this NG that's better than using a
passive audio switcher, and it's easier to get used too. I also have
to make a panel with some stereo pots in it to trim some of the
sources.

Thanks for your help.

ADC is fine.

ADC punchdown blocks are fine, though you will need a special tool for
them. They will work with stranded cable.

Personally, I like the solder type connectors, but that's a religious
debate.

Any of the used telecom products dealers out there.

There's a lot more contact area with a solder connection than a punchdown
connection. I've had trouble in the past with punch blocks, things like
conductors popping out under tension, strands pulling up & causing shorts. I
don't trust them. I'd take the time & do solder connections.
