View Full Version : John Mayer's new CD. What the heck happened?

I really enjoy his first CD, 'Room For Squares'. One of my favorite new
records in a while. So what is up with his new one, 'Heavier Things'? I
just got this and listened to it last night. Major disappointment. This
thing is just not happening at all. Success and money has certainly not
helped this songwriter. He seems to be on auto-pilot on this one.

I'm no expert on John's music, but judging by the "hits", including the
current one, it seems to me that the music is just as catchy and smart,
only more "electric" than it had been.

Except not as good.

Bummer.

Thats 2 albums in 3 weeks (the other being 'Sacred Love' by Sting) that I
have been really looking forward to that have been really disappointing.

I am buying the new Seal album today - fingers crossed.

And the production is fine, similar to the last one. I actually got both
of them in vinyl. Is vinyl making a comeback?

The difference between them is astounding, really boring non-discript
songs on the new one.

I don't have Sacred Love yet. Maybe I shouldn't bother? I like Seal, let
me know what you think of that one.

I covered this one when it came out in the UK a while ago. I ended up
returning it to the shop. See my post:

I think he's really talented but when I first saw him on a live show last year
I tuned in watched a few songs..the vocal style was really tiring for me..like
Dave Matthews on heroin...I didn't know him then and thought it might be those
songs..I tuned in about 40 minutes later and it was the same..that's his style
but it's gotta hurt to whisper loudly for an hour at a time.

for the record:
i think sting's new album is genius. the production, although not as
acoustic (organic?) sounding as I would like, is immpecable. The
chord arrangements, the song structure, everything about it just
speaks to me, so much so that the first time I listened to it i had to
pull my car over because i was going to crash if i didn't.
to me, elements of stings more recent work (mecury falling especially)
are evident, but as always he tries to take things in a new direction.
so, if anyone's on the fence, i would say check it out for yourself
instead of trusting others' opinins.
oh, and btw, i think the new seal album is very disappointing. #2
album is still breathtaking though (esp. don't cry).

It seems like one of those things that would appeal to college kids who are
in the process of trying to convince themselves how "deep" they are. That
will pass.

Yep, I'm a huge Sting fan...but I was also disspointed with his new CD. I
bought the new Seal CD and I really love it. I think it is really some
great work, and it's nice to hear that sound again...now that he's working
with Trevor again. Very nice work, I recommend it.

What do you expect buying records from these "artists"? Don't waste

good songwriters out there.

This is what I love about music - everyone hears, and, more importantly,
feels differently about different things.

and you're both right - YOU like / don't like it.

And, for the record, I *always* make my own decision as to whether I like
something or not, as I hope other readers would too. Theres lots of music I
like and lots I don't, but thats only my opinion / reaction.

I didn't get a chance to pick up Seal yet , but I am looking forward to
it!!!

I was disappointed based on the fact that I actually *like* these artists
previous work.

The fact that a hack and a pretentious asshole (down here we say "arsehole")
are involved doesn't bother me - I liked their music not their personality..

There definitely *are* some good songwriters out there, who would you
recommend?

Well, I should have been more specific. I was referring to Mayer as
the hack writer, and Sting as the pretentious arse. Although being
pretentious certainly doesn't preclude you from being a good writer
(steve earle comes to mind for some reason), I do think somewhat lowly
of Sting as a writer. Keep in mind these are "opinions". Please don't
tell me I'm wrong. I'm not.

As far as other songwriters? I have been really into Ron Sexsmith
lately; his new record is quite good. His second to last (blue boy)
was also impressive. I would classify him as a solidly GOOD
songwriter. Great singer, too.

I think Mayers first album has some brilliant writing on it. Even if you
don't agree there is some middle ground without calling him a hack
writer. Maybe your more impressed by something like, say, "should I stay
or should I go"?

And I have seen Sting over the years in concerts, on TV, in interviews
and in print and he has never come off as arrogant or pretentious to me.
Of course, as you said these are opinions.

What he gave is not a "link" (i.e. URL), it's the message ID of

I have only heard the radio track and watched the video of that track from the
new album. I thought this track was extremly well written. YMMV

i.m.o., that one is ok, and about 2 other tracks are pretty decent,
close to the level of his last go at it. But the rest fall flat.

The video for the track is very well done as well.

I can think of a thousand songs more impressive. I do like the spanish
parts, though.

That's odd. I think next to the entry for pretentious in Webster's
they should have a picture of Sting (or "Stink", as I like to call
him).

I heard the CD last weekend at a dinner party that thought it was great on
first listen.
