View Full Version : AES online daily coverage?

Ok, it's 2003 and we shouldn't have to wait until the December issues
of Mix and the others to learn about the latest toys introduced at
AES. (I know that the show previews came out already, but a lot of
the good stuff is held back until the actual show) I remember Pro
Sound News (I think?......) posted their big daily issue online each
day at the 2000 LA show, but I don't remember seeing anything like
that from either of the last two USA conventions. (this is the big
tabloid size newspaper that is published daily for the length of the
show. It works as a guide for show visitors to help them learn about
products they might have missed in the hall.) I checked both the AES
and Pro Sound News websites and found no mention of any online daily
coverage. I can't believe that something that worked this well would
not be available any more.

Does anybody know of any other sources for daily show coverage? I
know that a few RAP regulars manage to post lengthy journals to RAP or
other forums. But I'm really surprised that none of the trade
publications offer anything similar. Or do they? It just seems weird
to have less access to info now than we did 3 years ago at the 2000
show.....

Having done it myself in the past, I can tell you that it's a whole
lot of work. I'd spend all day at the show, go back to my hotel
and write for a few hours, and be too tired to eat a decent dinner. It
got to be too much for me, and nobody was willing to pay me for my
time or to get some help. I ususally post some quick highlights at the
end of the day now and do a more extensive report sometime during the
week following the show. Will that do?

The trade magazines want to sell advertising space, so unless they can
sell it on a web site along with daily show coverage, there's no
profit in it for them. Harmony Central usually does a daily report and
there are a few others, but most are based on press releases that they
pick up at the show and not from spending time talking to people at
booths.

Besides, what's your hurry? You won't be able to buy anything new yet
anyway?

Mike, your reports are always worth waiting for. And because you find so
much more than I do, reading your reports is even better than being
there.
Take your time.

I'm right now on the verge of telling _MIX_ to stop the freebie. I can't
seem to find enough info in it to justify its own production and
distribution costs. It just seems now like an unfortunate waste of
trees. I've not sprung for the _Keyboard_ cheap sub come-on following
the freebies, and one need only glance over the Wycliff Jean self
adulation to understand; ditto for a handful of others. I told PAR "No"
and they stopped for a while; I told PSN the same and the first missed
issue had Bill and Bonnie Hearne in it! It's back and the main thing it
offers is David McGee's "MusicEtc" column.

None of these rags want to see me go; they need me as a number they show
the advertisers. If those advertisers understood that I have never made
a purchase of _anything_ due to ad stimulus, I have no idea what they'd
do.

I've been to one AES. I met you in person there. That's why I went, to
meet folks I'd only "met" here. Some of those folks do, indeed, go to
AES to support their products. I enjoyed meeting Dan Kennedy, EveAnna
Manley, Dirk Brauner, Geoff Tanner, Fletcher, John Hardy, Brad Lunde and
some others of that ilk, and I enjoyed the company of many folks with
whom I converse in RAP. But I really don't lust for gear I don't already
know about and could care less what is the latest this or that.

I'll be at AES '04 in SF. When and where is the RAP dinner? Can we make
sure it doesn't conflict with the DAW-Mac dinner? <g>

Ty asked me if I was going to AES NY. I told him that would cost me as
much as a pair of CMC641's. Obviously, since I don't yet have the mics,
I'll skip NYC.

However, if you want to write up some good stuff, completely within your
skill set, I will stock extra Maker's Mark. A lot extra.

And that's a good enough reason for me to see if my current employer will
stump up to send me too! Hopefully at last get to meet you there Hank!

Just got mine so I reckon I should go! And even as I type they are playing
me some damn fine musick (cello concertos by Andrea Zani) as I do the
final bounce down to 16 bit for the CD.

Don't feel bad, Hank. It's a four hour drive for me and I'm not going.
Hell, if I did it right, I could drive up, sleep in the van, walk around the
show, go to the dinner and sleep in the van and come home, assuming I could
find parking. I could be the first one to do an AES tailgate party! <g> Of
course, I might end up having to park closer to the McCormack Center
(Chicago) but what the hey.

Too bad I threw away the back two seats in the Aerostar because they folded
down to make a queen sized bed. Would have been great in 1972! <g> Alas
the equipment space is too necessary these days.

Della and I enjoyed the '99 dinner in NYC so much that we're planning to
make the trip to SF next year. Hope to meet you there Hank and all the
other RAP regulars that we didn't get to meet last time.

Cheers.

James.
