This is a continuation of a discussion about low levels from a phono preamp.
I know the MOTU has a software boost of 6db. (I assume it's just stripping a
bit). 6dB is SLIGHTLY too much for the cartridge. So in theory I'd need to
"engage" the boost, but lower the fader a bit. I assume the fader is
processed in the analog domain.

My question is, does anyone know where this boost happens? i.e. does it
happen in the 24-bit domain inside the MOTU or on the PC driver side? I'm
using WaveLab and it says it's sampling 16-bits (I don't quite get why, but
there is no ability to change that).

In the optimal case, the 6dB boost would happen in the 24-bit side and then
it would be "reasonable" to engage the boost and lower the faders a bit. In
the suboptimal case I'm just fooling myself into doing software
normalization on a 16-bit file.
