View Full Version : mic placement for classical guitar

I guess the classical guitarists are invading. Probably because the
rec.music.classical.guitar has become more like a personal chat room.
Anyway, I was the guy on a tight budget looking to set up recording on
my new computer mainly for acoustic/classical guitar. I ordered two
Marshall 603 mics (remember BUDGET) and was wondering if you had any
advice on mic placement. Now, I know, I know, i have to experiment and
find what's best for me BUT some guidance may help reduce the number
of infinite configurations. Oh, the other equipment, if you have to
know, would be a cheap Behringer mixer and my computer. Sound card is
TBD. Right now I have the SB that came with the computer. Someone
recommended a Echo Mia (sounds like an Italian dish to me) but I'll
probably wait on that.

thanks in advance.

How about a read of the RAP FAQ for an outline of the attributes of the
standard approaches to stereo micing?

Here's something to help you decide on your mic placement for guitar. 1st
question: Do you have a great room to record in? 1. If the room acoustics are
nice and you don't have a problem with outside sounds or AC, then you may want
to mic around 10' away L and R spaced. 2. If the room is not great
acoustically, then consider a closer micing (2 to 3' away from the instrument)
and use a short stand to get the mics about 1 to 2' off the floor, below the
level of the guitar - These mics will be in XY configuration. (to be continued)

Also - try having someone else play while you (with headphones on) move the
mics around to find the best location.*
Good luck,
Terry

* Most likely out 2 feet from guitar bridge, XY.

No ****! Same thing here. It's amazing how important some folks think what
they have to say is.

You won't like this, but put them where they sound good. Get someone else to
play while you put on the cans and wave the mic around till you find a good
spot. Try pointed at where the neck meets the body and about 4 inches out.
