View Full Version : Soundforge mssg when saving I don't understand

I recently started getting the following message in Soundforge:

"The file has been saved as......Would you like to re-open in Direct mode
[Choosing no will re-open the file using a new temporary file]?

It never did this before. It would just save it. I must have inadvertantly
changed something in preferences somewhere. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Doc,

> Would you like to re-open in Direct mode <

SoundForge versions prior to 6 will either work directly on a file
destructively, or make a copy of the file and work on that. This is a
checkbox option when you load the file. If you work on a copy and like the
result, when you use Save it overwrites the original file with the copy and
you get that message. If you read through the various Help screens you'll
fine a more detailed explanation. But that's the gist of it.

Previous to a few days ago, I just worked on the file and it saved it.
Didn't require any checkbox. I would just open or create file, edit
then save. What option would cause it to start prompting with this
message? I've looked at the preferences box, haven't found one so far
that seems to effect it.

Were you by any chance doing something like saving a .wav file into an
MP# file? That's where I typically see it.

Nope, just saving as a .wav file. Doing it the exact same way I've
been doing it, now it's behaving differently.

Sorry for the delay, I was manning my booth at the AES show since last week.

When you open a file in SF 6 (I don't have 7) there's a check box to work on
the file in Read Only mode, which I believe forces a copy to be made. Maybe
that got checked somehow?

Read only mode is just that, READ ONLY. You can look at the file but not do
anything process wise to it. What you are talking about is called (in
Soundforge 5) "Operate directly on the sound file". This is NOT the default.
The default is to work on a copy (again in 5, not sure about later).
Checking the box lets you start work a lot a sooner as it doesn't have to
copy to a work file before you start. But of course any crash you have while
working on the file can destroy it completely.

Right, though it becomes the default if you used that option the last time
you opened a file. It wasn't clear (to me) in the original post exactly what
was going on. But ìvwre right about those options. Thanks for clarifying.
