which lowcost new laptop does perform well on audio use?
i have now HP ALI chipset based Pavilion ZE4407EA which
does seem to have little noise problems.

Something around 1000Euros perhaps.
for 900e this laptop
has 2200+ AMD XP
ATI Radeon Mobile
30Gb
256Mb
cdrw/dvd
firewire
....

but is there better solutions out there?

Are there ANY laptops out there with "decent" audio sections?

Are there ANY laptops out there with "decent" audio sections?

People have had "luck" with lots of things. A buddy of mine runs a
Fujitsu Lifebook with a Nuendo Multiset interface (essentially a
privately labeled RME product). We've run 18 tracks at 24 bit without
significant issues. People have had success with Toshiba Satellites.
We've found it works best to track to an external firewire drive as in
our case the speed of the internal laptop drive "seemed" to be a
limiting factor. When you get home, you unplug the drive and plug it
into your DAW. Isn't there a laptop recording forum on the Web or in
newsgroups? I believe there is....

Hello,

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 8200 with two HD (One on media bay for data), 512
MB RAM, RME Hamerfall DSP with Digiface and I can run 55 tracks of 24/48
without any problem (On 2,5" HD).

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 8500 and I was blown away with its performance
when running audio programs. It's fully the equal of my 2.26 GHz desktop
computer with high speed buss and RDRAM memory. And I was REALLY astonished
at how quiet the on-board sound card is for playback. I do not use this
laptop for recording, so I can't comment on how good the built-in sound card
is for that. Since the Inspiron has both USB 2.0 and Firewire ports, you can
easily connect an external sound card for recording.

Until you get a professional audio interface connected to it, you're
going to have lousy results with any computer. Once you take care of
that though, any current model will get the job done.

especially for a laptop. So I would plan on spending some real money.

I run an Apple Powerbook + Metric Halo 2882 + external 7200rpm drive
w/ Nuendo 2. Could not be a happier camper frankly. Powerbooks are
just wonderful to work on and Metrics provide all the sound quality
you could ask for in a little mobile rig. The whole system functions
extremely well together. I have never had so much as a millisecond
drop out, freeze/crash, or showstopper while tracking multi-day live
sessions. Of course it wasn't exactly low-cost either.

The rig maxes out at about 50 24bit/44.1 tracks + 20 plug ins.

I use my Emagic EMI 2/6 with it... thats good enought for me.
I place professional micpres when needed and if emagics own ad converters
does not do the trick i can use spdif and make emagic slave.
