View Full Version : MCI JH 16

To all,
I have a '75 MCI JH 16 24 track in need of some service/work. I've been
putting off on doing the repairs myself because my time has not allowed me
the "pleasure" of getting into the machine. Would anyone happen to know of
any good reasonably priced MCI or 2" tape techs in the New Jersey/New York
area?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Yusef

naah, it's fine, just reach in and gently pull on the circuitboards where they
meet those Gawdawful solder-less connections...THIS is where all those old
MCI's fail.
A little shimmy and the connection is back.

Yeah I know that's where most of these machines crap out on those
connectors. I actually played with those already. The issue I'm having is
the record levels are way too low even after my adjustments. This happened
one day out of the blue and I've ran every alignment tape I had and still no
go.
I admit I do need to learn the deck more but, right now time doesn't permit
and I have projects to finish. I'm gonna give Audio Technologies a call.
Thanks for the referral. I will definitely pick the techs brain for
information as I always do. I usually would keep trying to tackle this
myself but, I don't have the luxury to do so right now , which sucks.
I'll play with the connectors one more time and see if I can save myself
some money.
Thanks

The record levels are all too low, on all channels? And the low end response
is very poor?
And when you do the record alignment, you can't get the bias control up high
enough to find the peak?
And the level is fine with the switch on input, but listening off the tape
it's not?

That machine's been around for a few years. Has it ever been recapped?
Clean out the dust, spray clean the connectors, replace the electrolytic
caps. Keep it cool and clean. Talk to it.

Bias oscillator problem? First audio drawer has a strip board w/oscillator
located on the bottom of the drawer. You'll recognize the circuit by a coil
with an aluminum tank-like cover over it. My guess is the problem lies
around there. Of course I could be wrong. Its been years since I've worked
on those machines. If its happening on all channels and playback is good,
its probably not power supply related. The only other thing in common with
all record boards is the oscillator.
Good Luck,
Cary

Would you like to add something to this, like it sounds awful
(distorted) or there's no high end? When all the channels exhibit the
same failure mode it's bound to be something commmon to all of them.
Suspicious areas are the bias oscillator, a power supply, or a big
chunk of foreign matter on the record head.

Ok well,
I'll check for sonic discrepencies again.
I can actually playback recorded material and it polays fine with no unusual
distortion or any other unwelcomed artfacts. This problem only surfaces in
record mode. That was why I thought an alignment would have rectified the
problem but, I did that and its' still screwin' up.
