View Full Version : Recording quality of The White Stripes "Elephant"

So the other day I was playing The White Stripes "Elephant" in the
car. My girlfriend says, "This recording sounds a lot better than so
much of the other rock stuff nowadays." It was recorded on 8-track
analog. She knows a tiny little bit about recording, but is not
terribly interested in the recording process. Nevertheless, the
difference between a lot of modern recordings and The White Stripes
was immediately apparent to her.

LOL. After almost ten years of marriage, my wife now says things like
"What's with all the reverb on the snare?...What is this...like 1986?" and
"I really like this song...and it was produced really well..very clean".
Hehehe...I'm impressed and a little sad for her at the same time, as it
seems I may be ruining how she listens to music! Remember how you used to
listen to music before being in production? We just liked the song or we
didn't. I miss being able to ignore production things...Oh well. Is
ignorance really bliss? :-)

Yes, ignorance is really bliss. You're lucky; my girlfriend just said
earlier today, "I HATE the way he sings. Why do you keep listening to that
part over and over?"

Yes, that's a nice calrec console and a plug for my friend Mark Neill too, who
has the "Sister studio" with the same design he helped Liam with.

Liam was producing great results with a Tascam 38 before he started
using the Studer - it isn't just the gear that counts.
Cheers.

I would say it is the white stripes that count. If you put 2 mics in
front of them, they would sound like the white stripes.

I think it joust sounds really good. Of course the tone comes from the
White Stripes themselves but the engineer did a great job capturing and
mixing it with an old dirty vibe.

I haven't heard all of the album, but from what I have heard it sounds
like much of the material that Toerag have recorded over the last 7
years or so. Toerag is one of the few studios that has a distinctive
sound and that sound stays similar despite changing equipment.
I've recorded a couple of bands that also recorded at Toerag and my
recordings sound very different to Liam's.
Cheers.

there's a nice little article in Sound On Sound this month on the
producer/engineer who did the record (and his studio). they talk a
little in the article about the media exaggerating about the whole
recording process and how almost as much of the press dealing with the
record has focused on the recording itself as on the band. they
mention stories that sort of falsify details about the studio saying
nothing in it was made after 1963 and other such things...like the
studio is the ultimate knee-jerk reaction to "modern digital
recording".
the producer/engineer whose studio it is seems to be anything but what
those stories describe. he seems like more of a "right tool for the
right job" kind of guy than some sort of analog elitist. it's a nice
read....i still haven't heard their new record, but after reading the
article and some of what's been said on this thread, i'm a little
intrigued to hear it...

I don't love the White Stripes, but this albums is much better thatn the first.
For people who want to chek it out for fideltiy, you may or may not know
that the advnace copies were on vinyl only as a method of stopping or
slowing down pirating. I got to hear a first play of the vinyl off a well
maintained turntable, thorugh a pair of MP2NVs through my monitors. It
sounded really really good and was definitely a sound I had never heard
before. When I was young and had a turntable I don't have quite the same
monitoring system.
If you can find one of the 500 copies of Elephant on vinyl, it's really
worth hearing.
