I am pondering purchasing a Nuendo system...some people say that Cubase SX
is almost the same thing...any pro's or con's for either system?
As always, any use input is greatly appreciated.

Check out Samplitude also, it is mainly built for multitrack audio,
with limited midi functionality.Lot of great tools built in.

MIDI in Samplitude and Sequoia has been a source of major improvements in
recent months... For audio, they can't be beat, but MIDI sequencing is
probably better elsewhere. That said, there will be another major release
in a couple months (or end of this month perhaps?) with major midi updates.

I would suggest Cubase SX over Nuendo for audio-only production. I
find the GUI much easier on the eyes, which can be meaningful if you
spend a lot of time with it. This may seem superficial...

There used to be a difference on Sound Engines in these two...Nuendo sounded
a little better. But with the new SX2 release of Cubase...the only real
difference is the focus of the software, meaning that Nuendo is more
Audio-Only, Multi-Track oriented and SX2 has all the cool MIDI features for
sequencing. Other than that, no big difference (except price) as Nuendo
runs almost double the cost of SX2. They say that the new versions of SX2
and Nuendo2 will utilize the same sound engine...so, that's not even an
issue anymore.

I thought I read that Cubase SX used the older Nuendo audio engine and
that Nuendo 2 is all new code. Anyone know about this for sure?

I read an article with QandA from a Steinberg rep and he said that both new
versions will have the same audio engine. So, same sound. AND,
interchangable file types now too. He said that you will be able to open SX
files in Nuendo and vise versa as a result of using the same audio engine.

Moreover, the new update to Nuendo (2.1?) should introduce all the
MIDI features of SX 2.0 into Nuendo (not sure about vsti freeze, though).
As far as file format compatibility, it's something like this:
Cubase VST > Nuendo 1.5 > Cubase SX 1.0 > Nuendo 2.0 > Cubase SX 2.0.
A>B means you can open files from A inside B, but not vice versa.
Perhaps you'll be able to open SX 2 files inside Nuendo 2.1, not sure.
Overall, I'd recommend SX for generic audio and midi work-- it's very
stable, and if you are not doing post-production, there is no reason to
pay the Nuendo premium.

I use Nuendo 2.01 on mac for audio editing/automation and post… and I
love it.
I've never used Cubase… well once for about 5 seconds and I thought it
sucked and never touched it again. Of course that was a long time ago
in OS9.
Cubase and Nuendo now share the same audio engine. Nuendo is marketed
as Steinberg's flagship program: it contains all of the abilities of
Cubase, but Cubase does not contain all of the ability of Nuendo.
That's my understanding of it anyhow.
You can find more information on the Nuendo board, there are plenty of
posts on this topic. Goto www.nuendo.com.
