Anyone here know any of the legal implications or issues surrounding
the usage of a stage name? Aside from registering it as a
trademark...

I've seen it be a pain in the ass while flying if your tickets & such are
booked that way.

Just look at John "The Wad" Holmes, man...

Pseudonyms are common in the music biz. I know Prince published songs under
no less than 6 pseudonyms (usually on tracks that he wrote for others). So
it should be easy to ensure that the funds still get pointed back to you.

As for anything legal, consult a lawyer. Don't go by what someone tells
you...

Someone like me for instance. ;)

Basically under US law, you can legally use another name for any
legal purpose you want. ( authors do this all the time. They write
romance novels under a pseudonym, or if they have a day job that
they don't want to associate their writing with. ) I know a number
of authors who write under a psudonym for various reasons.
You need to register that pseudonym with your home state
government as a DBA ( Doing Business As ) name. This allows you
to open a checking account and cash checks written to your
stage name. Of course the bank reports it to the IRS under your
real name.
If you use the stage name in any sort of criminal scheme, then
there is an additional charge of using a false name to commit a
crime. ( I don't know the legalese for that. )
Laws are going to be different in other countries.

Thank you, all, for the info.

Anyone know the implications vis-a-vis a performer's use of a stage
name who wants to use the name internationally (primarily US), and an
actual "band" already using the same name in a particular state?

Seems to me, if you have "legal" questions, you should be asking someone who
is an expert in "legal" matters, ie. an attorney. Any you advice you get
from a group of people on an audio newsgroup may or may not be correct, and
if you tell a judge "well, RAP told me it was so" then he (or she) would do
well to throw you out on your ear. Not to say there aren't people on here
who may (or may not) know the answer, but I sure wouldn't trust the advice I
got here in a court of law (which, by the way, is where people dispute
"legal" questions, usually with the help of an attorney). YMMV

Of course. I'm "tossing around" the question in a "general info" kind of way.
