Just curious what is out there in the $100-$200 ballpark. If it can serve
dual use as a room/ambient mic for mic'ing a guitar cab, that would be
perfect.
thanks,

I like the AKG d880 for vocals. Particularly good with female
vocalists, I find.

I got an AT4040 from Ebay for $200 once that I think is pretty darn good for
both things. Most of them go for more, so you have to keep your eyes out.
Maybe a 4033?

Shure SM-57, about $85.
For the longest time has been a very popular mic for recording guitar
cabs. Also can use it live. Also can use it for vocals. Also will
"reject" most sound that's not close to the mic. I'm guessing you
have a budget setup, and this isolation will be a blessing to you.

so if you want to spend the full $200. Then also get a pair of Octava
Mk-012's from Guitar Center for the amazingly low price (seriously) of
$99. Those are good all-purpose instrument mics, and at that price
it's unbeatable.
You could even do drums then. Put the pair of Octavas as overheads
and then stick the 57 on the kick. I'm not saying this will be the
ultimate setup ever, but at least it gets you doing things.
The octavas require "phantom power" so make sure your mixer/preamp has
phantom on it, or you will need to buy the little phantom boxes for
about $18 each.

i would probably go with a shure sm57 or beyer m88 or m201. if you
could stretch the budget a tad, a shure sm7 or sennheiser md421 would
be cool as well. all of the mics i mentioned would work in several
other applications as well.
good luck,
joshua

My most consistently chosen vocal mic in that price range has without
a doubt been the Beyer M88. I've also lucked into a particularly good
sounding Oktava MK-319 that I use on vocals a lot, too. It cost me
under $200.
