I am dumping outboard gear and transitioning to mix exclusively in a
software mixing enviroment (Logic Audio Platinum).
I would like to mix everything out via SPIDF from my sound card to an
Alesis Masterlink - and monitor from the Masterlink.
Is anyone using active monitor speakers in this type of setup or am I
locked in to using an amplifier with passive monitors in order to
control the monitor volume?

You can control you monitor volume, if you wish, from within the software by
putting a virtual fader on the bus that is feeding the converter to your
monitor. A better idea is to get some sort of outboard monitoring box that
gives you a real volume control and maybe some other things, like inputs for CD
players or headphone outputs, etc.
It doesn't matter if you're using powered monitors of an amp/speaker combo.
You shouldn't be controlling your mix volume at the power amp anyway.

You can purchase an NHT passive volume control for around $150.00 (or
thereabouts) or spend more and get a Coleman audio box that will allow more
flexibility if you've got multiple monitors.
