View Full Version : Interesting places to visit in Nashville?
John

I'm going to be visiting Nashville in the next week or so, and was wondering
what would be some interesting things to see in the musical/recording context.
Good music stores, interesting venues, etc?

If you like good songwriting and Don Schlitz happens to be at The Bluebird
Cafe (he's there pretty often on "Don for a Dollar" nite) I HIGHLY suggest
it. The most jaw dropping thing I've ever seen. Even if you don't like
country I guarantee you'll know at least half a dozen of his songs. Three
hours of nothing but hits. And the two he did that have never been cut were
better than the hits.

I plan on seeking out more information about Don, but my first search
came up with something that was pretty funny:

I don't know who that is or what it has to do with Don but here's the
Bluebird's website: http://www.bluebirdcafe.com/.

Jeez - am I the only person in the world who dislikes that place? it's
pretentious, stuffy, and they don't even want you to talk while the
songwriters are playing. I always figured it the song can't keep my
attention for 3 minutes, the writers need to know that...

No, you're not. I think a cruise down Broadway would be more fun, alot more fun
than that place. My wife got shhuushh'd there way back.
If you're a guitar player Cottten Music has some nice high endy guitars in a
mom & pop type atmosphere, 3rd & Lindsley's a cool club, Douglas Corner's
funky. There's always Gruhn's although the guitars are better maintained at
Cotten, tho a thousand less of them.

The only good thing about the Bluebird is their "shhhh!" policy. I actually
appreciate that. Other than that it's dripping with pretense. Some of the in the
round stuff there will make you want to puke. "Look at me, look at me I'm a
'serious' songwriter."
Try the Wooten Brothers at Third and Linsley on Wednesday nights for some
unbelievable funk. And check out what's happening at the Station Inn for some
great bluegrass.
Also check out Hatch Show Print on Broadway. One of the last old concert poster
letter press print shops around. Very cool...

I won't set foot in that Godforsaken place. It represents EVERYTHING that's
wrong with country music today.

They'll ignore talking because they're so used to it. Tomato bombardment
gets their attention.

I'd rather play in a biker bar. (and come to think of it, I have turned down
playing the Bluebird to play a bike bar...).

If you're into historic stuff, both the Hermitage and the Belle Meade
mansion are cool. If you're into gardens and artsy type stuff, Cheekwood is
cool as well. If you're here on a weekend, the Opry is worth seeing, if only
for the historical aspects...

This has less to do with the band and more to do with the audience. Having
spent way more time as a performer than an engineer, let me tell you I HATE
people who make a racket when I'm playing. Ask any musician what it's like
to be playing a quiet ballad and having difficulty hearing your band above
the din. This is not about being a pretentious artist, it's about an
audience being ignorant. Just imagine if someone did that during a mix. I've
played concerts where I could hear a pin drop, and it wasn't a function of
the band playing any differently than it did in the noisy club.
It's a pleasure to play a club where a noisy audience is not tolerated.

Oh, yeah. I've seen some of the most pretentious funny stuff there too but
the good songwriters (like Don) are worth it. Actually I find the cattle
call writers nights fun in that "train wreck" sort of way. Not really
laughing but amazed at what people will do in close quarters to be famous.

Here would be my choices from the Scene and elsewhere:
Monday - The Timejumpers at the Station Inn
Tuesday - The Players at 3rd & Lindsley
Wednesday - Wooten Bros reunion at 3rd & Lindsley
OR see me at the 5-Spot in East Nashville, along with
Van Manakas and Dale Armstrong having fun for serious players
Thursday - should be Hot Club of Nashville at the Staion Inn.
Richard Smith is a phenominal gtr player.
Cotten Music and gruhn and the Guitar Gal for guitars. Corner Music for
almost everthing. Primal Gear and Blevins for Pro Audio.

I feel that the audience is paying the bills and therefore has the right
to do as they please, modulo applicable legalities. What gets me is when
the club interferes with performers. One of my bands used to play a
club that actually paged it patrons for phone calls using a particularly
bad sounding house "PA". This band's front man (not me!) was good at
using dynamics to grab an audience's attention. Far too frequently the
bartenders would ruin the moment with "PHONE CALL FOR JOE BLOW! JOE BLOW
TO THE PHONE, PLEASE!"

to do as they please, modulo applicable legalities.

I suppose everyone should go to the Country Music Hall of Fame once. I
was there once at its old location and went to the new place during
the NAMM show. For something that could be really hokey, it's
remarkably well done. Check to see when they give the tours of the
archive and try to get on one of those. It costs too much money, but
hey, it's commercial music - always has been.
Oh, and check for out-of-phase channels in the listening kiosks. I
heard one when I was there last. I think it was playing Web Pierce's
"Slowly."

That's standard in a jazz club specializing in vocalists. Talking brings
severe disapproval, even to the point of removal. I'd think any club that
has a specific focus and specific clientele wouldn't be the place to go for
conversation. Particularly for vocalists and songwriters. Then again,
what's left? A club with a Skynyrd tribute band and 120 dB of noise level?

Roger, those folks are to the point that an approving 'Uh huh" in response
to a well written line will bring the wrath of management down. I'm not
saying that I want to be able to converse loudly about the local sports
teams, NASCAR or the hooters on the singer - but the Bluebirs seems to want
a church-like respect given to the folks on stage, whether they deserve it
or not. There are better places for me to spend my time and money.

Yep. And that's why I would rather go to a chamber music concert or to the
theater. I'm willing to pay for the ambience. On the other hand, If I'm
sitting in a beer joint in a strip center (The location of the Bluebird),
listening to third rate songs by second rate writers (as is usually the case

usually the case at the Bluebird), my expectations are quite different.

For entertainment, NOTHING beats the Time Jumpers every Monday night at

If you can let me know in advance, I can give you audio-oriented tours

I have left the venue in those few instances that combined an uninteresting
program with untalented performers, and even an interesting program when the
performers are not up to the complexities that make the music interesting (a
faculty quartet making a brave stab at the Shostakovitch quartets, for
example. I've also left jazz performances when they didn't hold my interest.
With bands and pop music in general, I tend to hear them in bars; if I don't
like them, I leave. With live theater, I generally don't return after the
interval. And unfortunately, I have fallen asleep a time or two.. .
But you're zeroing in on inappropriate similes; In a concert or a theatrical
performance, many elements are present, which can carry the day despite weak
performances or material. Two easy examples; When I saw Chick Corea's
acoustic band, it was possible to overlook Dave Wekl because Chick and John
Pattitucci were playing great. And at a touring performance of "Kiss Me
Kate", the rather weak male lead (played, I believe, by a former teen
idol), was more than made up for by a stellar performance from the other
principals, especially the female lead. And the music, of course.
Other examples come to mind - less that wonderful sound at a Jesus Christ
Superstar performances, but not only is the music enormously familiar, but
Teddy Neely and Carl Anderson were wonderful. A weak Annie in "Annie Get
Your Gun" was made up for by (again) my familiarity with the score and a
great supporting cast (Including Larry Storch as Sitting Bull). However, if
I had seen that performance on Broadway, I likely would not have come back
after the interval (Unless it was to simply to watch Larry Storch). A
non-equity (I hope) performance of Rent; again weak singers in general (one
of the female leads rocked, though), and a wonderful band - again, music
that I'm very familiar with. So even though I may not be thrilled with some
parts of a show, other parts can keep me entertained. It's the same with
orchestral performances - Most people who support their local orchestra will
admit to persevering through the first half of the performance in order to
hear the second half (or the soloist).
Life is too short and life is too busy for me to subject myself to
situations I don't enjoy. And the Bluebird is a situation I would rather
avoid; it's hard to fall asleep in those chairs.

Oh, I understand. I was just mentioning that it's not too far out of the
norm for "performers" rather than bar band type venues. I would never go to
