View Full Version : Is your Atlas boom stand sitting broken in the corner?

Good, me too. I am looking for a spare wheel/flange for my Atlas SB36
boom stand. I spoke with Atlas and they want $150 for a replacement
set and they dont sell singles (ironic given that I can buy a new
stand for ten bucks more).

There has to be someone in this US of A who is looking to get a
replacement wheel/flange for their stand as well. Maybe we can UNITE
and all go in together and get what we need for less instead of being
FORCED to buy more crap than we need. We will beat ATLAS at their
game!!!! :)

Pipe dream?

BTW Black Audio doesnt carry these...already looked. Post if you are
interested.

Call Black up and explain your plight. They might be willing to start
carrying them if you ask. They are very good about that sort of thing.

Dusk,

Try Ametron in Hollywood (on Argyle, one block north of Sunset)

They have an aisle with nothing but Atlas parts, both new and salvage.
They have a couple of boxes that look like they stripped a couple of
sb36 stands and tossed all the parts in a box. When I bought my used
sb36, I got several parts from Ametron by searching through those
boxes. No guarantee that they will have exactly what you need, but
they are your best chance.

Thank you both for your responses...I am making a trip to Hollywood
this week to suss this out. Othewise it looks like I might be screwed.
It's hard to imagine Black would start manufacturing a part that seems
to have such little demand...it's worth a try I guess.

Are you talking about the casters on the base of the stand? Those are pretty
much standard hardware store stuff.

If it's the casting that holds the caster, that is another matter.

Since they provide continuing support for mic stands, they might buy a
set of three wheel mounts and sell them individually. Might, that is,
if they think that anyone else might some day break one and need a
replacement.

Speaking of big mother mic stands, a friend of Dan Kennedy's is going
to be showing a big boom in the Great River booth at the AES show next
week. He says he can do chin-ups on it with the boom extended. I
didn't see the whole stand (he has some clever clamping arrangements,
patents pending) but the base is really interesting. Applying physics
for a change, he puts the majority of the mass out on the
circumference rather than making a big solid wheel.

I wish it was just the caster...its the flange too. It is obviously a
specialty piece. I thought about taking it to a metal shop but they
would probably charge just as much to fabricate one.

Its situations like this that make me lose respect for a
corporation...

Hi Dusk,

I'm not going to be any help to you but I'm curious about this thread since
I own two of these stands. Which part is the 'flange' exactly? The
triangular base or the angled piece of metal that attaches the caster to the
base or? Below is a link to a parts breakdown for reference :
http://www.atlassound.com/techLib/SLSheets/SL11.1502.PDF

Thanks, I'm a little slow at times!

Best of luck with getting your stand fixed!

Thanks...Its the angled piece of metal that attaches the wheel to the
base. I guess you could call it a flange but it really isn't one. I
don't know wtf to call it...ironically the sales rep at the
manufacturer didn't have a name for it either. He just called it the
"caster set".

I don't need the wheel though. One could procure that from anywhere.

I haven't done this but you could try :
1) take one of your good 'flanges' to a metal fabricator and see how much it
would cost to make one out of scarp piece of plate steel
2) take all the flanges off, drill the mounting holes in the base all the
way through, mount the casters directly to the base. This should work
although your stand will now be a little taller and tip over easier on long
reaches.
3) take all the flanges off and attach rubber feet to the base. It wont
roll around but should only cost you $10 or so.
4) I've actually been wanting another heavy duty stand similar to the SB36
but with no wheels and only one of the boom extension tubes. So, you seem to
know where you can buy a complete SB36 new for $160 or so, right? Or if you
find a complete stand in good shape I might be interested in buying it from
you minus the flanges Email me direct and maybe we can work something out.

Best of luck!

I don't know, but even our local little film lighting equipment store still
sells sand bags to stop stands from tipping over. Or, I've seen stands from
the same store that offers reasonably priced subtitutes for the Atlas, or
more specific, used for film but have thread adapters that work with mic
setups. I believe JnyVee and I saw one with a 15' extension boom for less
than $200 sans adapters and it would easily hold an expensive mic safely.
Unfortunately I got neither a catalog nor a stand, but I know it's a mile or
two away if I need it.

Why? They'll sell you the part you need, or is the 'lose respect'
because they insist on selling you three of them? That's probably how
they stock them, as a kit for manufacturing. I'll bet they don't get a
whole lot of requests for one bracket because it's not very likely to
break.

Just out of curiousity, how did you break it anyway?

Correction...they wont sell me squat since I am not a dealer but they
told me what was available on the market....only in sets of three's.
My point was that if a manufacturer feels it's too petty for them to
either build a good product or support it when it is clear there is a
demand for it they are just over pond scum IMHO. I wont support such
corps with my dollars if I can avoid it. (It IS possible for a corp to
make money AND provide excellent support you know (Oster comes to
mind)).

Whatever...who the hell cares what I think. It just breaks my heart to
see such a good company provide such "limited" (we will call it)
support for their product. It wouldnt kill them to make a support
store since mic stands generally litter the studios I have been in
over the years.

BTW I didnt break the flange...I got the stand used minus one wheel. I
had figured obtaining a replacment would be an easy thing. In this
case I think I will either wait for a replacement part to show up or
do as the gentleman above suggested....get a new stand for the wheels
and sell the stand off for whatever I can get for it.

Well, you can take off the other two wheels and it becomes the same
mic stand minus the -W. Then you'll have two wheels to sell to the
next person who needs them.

Belive me, the industry NEEDS Atlas sound, but I understand your
frustration. I've had things that would be perfectly good if only I
could get a part that's missing or broken.

Take one flange off, and take it to your local auto body shop and ask
if they can make one just like it for you. A place that does race cars
and custom work shouldn't have any trouble with it, and it'll probably
cost a good bit less than Atlas will charge.
