View Full Version : Is this a cell phone?

Ty Ford
May 13th 11, 08:23 PM
Hey,

I got a brand new interference sound I've never heard before today coming in
on a mic during a session here.

http://home.comcast.net/~tyreeford/cell.wav

Has anyone heard this yet? What is it?

The client said her cell phone was dead off.

I swapped out the cable for one that Eric Toline had wired up with the
Neutrik EMF defeating XLRs and the noise went away.

Regards,

Ty Ford

Well it is certainly not a GSM phone. Maybe 3G or GPRS - I haven't
heard what they sound like as a source of interference.

As I'm in a country (Australia), that uses GSM & GPRS, it's certainly not
a noise that I've heard from a mobile device.

OK I'll admit I didn't hear any noise...

Can everyone else here it? I can't...

Maybe that's why I'm such a big believer in measurements..

It sounds to me like something automatically dialling a DTMF sequence. I
can't work out how it would be coming in as RF, though, unless it's an
analogue cordless phone nearby.

I´d put my money on that source being a cell phone of some kind, it
doesn´t sound like RFI of any kind, but much more like a DTMF acoustic
dial tone, you´d be amazed at just how much digital and analogue
garbage comes out of these things at tonnes of separate frequencies,
even when they´re in so called ´silent´ mode or even when in standby.
I have this old compact 5W self-powered speaker system that has some
kind of weird transformer in it, sat in my studio. It was made in the
days ´pre-mobile phone´ and seems to react to every bit of high-end EM
spectrum noise that´s around, makes for quite an effective yard stick
to see what digital garbage is floating around in a potential
location, I often take it out on audio reccies... But this sounds like
it came out of a digital amplifier, of the kind used in cells... on my
Grado cans, I can also hear on your original recording low frequency
vibrations preceding the musical tone, they sound like LF battery
vibrate alerts, also from a cell. Many clients put their phones on
´silent´ and consider that to be ´off´... or possibly, there was
another one in the room?

OK I hear that in the original at 0:14 but that is AFTER the take?

The same sound is present during the start of the take, but nothing
like as obvious.

It sounds to me more like a simple digital game sound effect. Or a ring
tone.

It's not a cellphone. It doesn't sound like FSK data either.

By any chance were you recording near a paging system tower? Old-style
paging services were on 30-50 Mhz band and sounded kind of like that.

Nope. It was here in my studio where I have recorded umpteen hours of stuff
and never heard anything like this. What's weirder is that at other times it
varied in intensity (loudness) even within one sequence; fading in and out.

I can't tell on this computer, sounds pretty good (hey, cheap speakers). Send me
a couple more samples.

I listened to most of the stuff just now on my centech cable tracer.
The only thing that comes close is the touch pad on my laptop. I check
two different phone types, iPad, bluetooth, wifi, etc. No tones out of
displays.

Ty,

Did the client HAVE a cell phone regardless of if she thought it was on or
off?

Was it a GSM type cellphone by chance?

Agree, and I wonder about it is an acoustic source in someones pocket or
electromagnetically induced into a cable or a mic, ie. possibly not at all
RFI.

We didn't hear it "in the air." When I muted that mic input (only using one)
the signal from the mic and the noise stopped.

She thought her phone was "dead off" and should know the difference.

She'll be coming back in a few weeks. I'll see if we have time to experiment

Thanks for everyone's thoughts. The special Eric Toline cable foiled it,
presuming it kept on going after I swapped out the mic cable.

Ty Ford

I have to analyze all kinds of cell phone audio anomalies in my day
job for a major us provider. Its no rfi or dtmf I have ever
encountered. I think you can eliminate phones as the cause
