holy crap. I just got a pair of these. they're for a small gallery
space (non profit org) where I do concerts a few times a year. The
director is my best friend, so i thought I'd install a small PA system
so it would be "right" and then when I play there I wouldn't have to
bring in a PA. for this room, the 8's should be plenty. I'm going to
get the yoke mounts and mount them in the ceiling trusses.

But they arrived this morning, so I hooked them up to an amp and ran a
microphone and then some recorded material through them to see how
they sounded (and since I got them used, i wanted to make sure they
were good....). so i just had them on the floor.

wow. The clarity was incredible and they got *very* loud and full in
this room without any hint of stress. I was powering them with a qsc
gx5, which puts out 500watts per side at 8ohms. I wish they were here
yesterday so i could've used them for my concert last night. I'm very
excited. I'm going to get 2 more pair- one more for wedges when
necessary, and one more for me to carry around for PA with my trio. I
think just the single pair of V8's will be plenty good for anything
with my group where I'll need my own SR.

One thing, they don't have pole mount holes.... do i buy a special
mount so I can use them on poles in a mobile rig?

the pair I bought for the hall, I'm going to have to find a pair of
yoke mounts for.... I think I'll get another qsc gx5 amp- it seems to
be a good value and sounds good.... And I want to put some sort of
speaker protection/limiting in this system since I won't be running it
except when I'm performing there... is that possible? or necessary?
if so what do I get. or is it a bad idea?

I'm so impressed. I guess this is what good speakers sound like.

You can buy a gizmo that looks like a pipe flange with a
hole that fits a standard speaker pole size. Look up On
Stage Stands.

If you attach it to the bottom of the speaker box so that
the part that slips over the pole sticks out, it adds a few
inches to the box that you'll waste when packing. I've seen
some that are closed at one end that you can mount flush
(with the pole going up inside the box) but you have to be
careful when installing them.

I think Scott had an article about using a light bulb for
speaker protection. If so he'll probably chime in.

Yes, this is normal! This is a reasonable expectation for a set of speakers.

Yes, it's Tannoy part VTH, it's something like ten bucks. You can also use
the VCS ceiling mount and bolt a pole bracket to it, but it costs more money.

I forget if the tweeters are fused or not, but if you are running the system
unattended with a single full-range amp it might be a good idea to do it.

The real solution is to use the Tannoy TX1 loudspeaker controller and set
the gains precisely to allow the TX1 protection to do the job, but that is
kind of expensive for a single pair of 8".

This is what good PA speakers sound like. Good monitors are much better than
this.

The executive summary of that paper is, "don't use light bulbs for protection."
If you want to know why, you can pay $5 to the AES for preprint 5881.

if not the tannoy (which seems difficult to source, let alone is
probably very expensive), what's a good way to protect the speakers
without adding crappy sound? or should I just not worry too much. I
think the qsc amp has a circuit built in- is that sufficient? GX3 is
what I ordered for the room. the speakers are rated at 260w program
@8ohms and the amp is 300/channel at 8ohms.

these speakers sound stupid good, especially for what I paid. $250
for the pair! and they look brand new.
