is my 414 worth selling?

it's a B-ULS with the switches, not the button and green led. works
great. Scott D, you won't through it a few years ago, repaired a
switch and cleaned it up.

I just NEVER use it. I don't remember the last time I took it out of
the box. It sounds fine, and is great for general whatever you need
to mic type stuff, but I always go to something else first. I would
use it for vocals, but i have that THE with the lollipop head that I
like for vocals. I like it even better for sax though, so I was
thinking, if it were worth selling the 414, I'd sell it and put that
money toward a decent all purpose vocal mic. but if it's only worth 3
or 400 used then it's probably better to just keep it in case I need
to throw up an extra mic on something, right?

It's just a shame it just sits there. and I wouldn't mind a decent
vocal mic.

Sure, it's worth selling. It's a popular microphone and a
lot of people like them. I've lost some mics to (ahem)
"attrition" but I've never sold one because I don't need the
money and some time I might need the mic. On the other hand,
since you have a fairly limited range of what you record and
if it's not working for you, no reason not to get rid of it.
particularly if you have something else you'd like to try.

I guess that, like it or not, eBay is the source for
determining an asking price. Or you can do it the old
fashioned way and decide what it's worth to you to not get
rid of it.

I just tested about 4000$ worth of live vocal mics and decided on two
winners
in the I can't believe a mic can be this good catagory is the
Sennheiser 965 eats the nuemann 104/5 series for breakfast

and in the I simply love a utility of a dynamic the winner is
the Heil pr35

Tried Telefunkon(80), Ev(re16), Neumann(102), AT(5400) a slew of shures,
audix 5 and 10's heil pr20

I also kept the at 5400 due to its total lack personality and I feel it will
deliver as a acoustic instrument mic

Do you have any other mic that goes Fig 8 with the flip of a switch?

I might agree, except for really breathy singers. There's a sort of thin
pop vocal that really does better on the KMS104 than anything else.

I still think the 431 is even better than the 965 for general purpose use,
though. It's not so peaky on top which is maybe less fashionable.

I asked the editor of an audio magazine about getting me a PR35 to audition
and he basically said that they had got so ****ed off with Heil after reviewing
the PR20 that they weren't dealing with them again.

I was just thinking that before I read this.... it's the only mic i
own that does fig 8 at all, and while I haven't used it in what seems
like forever, I think fig 8 is the only pattern I've ever used this
thing in. Maybe I should just keep it.

Figure 8 is the one pattern that works pretty well on a 414.

Use it with any of your other microphones in an MS array if you want
more versatility from it. Then you could have stereo cardioid, omni or
hypercardioid depending on which micropnone you use for the "M"

I sure do like the PR40 for voice. If you contact Bob Heil, he may send you one.
He has been very responsive to the couple of questions I've had.

I may have missed info earlier in thread, but apart from every flavour being
well worth keeping, what flavour is it ?
