so i've been building this thing for about a year and i've learned
tons and it looks a bit crap, but anyway, i'm just thinking about what
to finish the walls and ceiling (and floor) with. i used the gervais
book and did everything i could afford to make it "sound proof" (which
i know it won't be...). does anyone have any thoughts on finishing?
just finish it all normally with tape, mud and paint? do the whole
thing (walls and ceiling) in auralex? just the ceiling? just bits
after testing sounds? different product? carpet? special carpet? glue?
staples? screws? anyway, just throwing it all out there to see if
anyone has any ok-ish looking cheap-ish ideas to finish it off that
could potentially add anything to sound isolation as well... thoughts?
admonitions? spring style-tips? thanks!

I've found tons of useful info there. Go there. Read profusely.

thanks for the reply! that's one of the many places i've looked, but
mainly i was just wondering if anyone in here has any thoughts... not
a big deal really. just if something popped out.

= acoustic nightmare, most likely, unless the dimensions just happen to
be perfect and you want a reverberant space. unless it's a pretty large
space, you probably don't want that, as it will be very boxy sounding

= something not likely to work well for tracking or mixing, as it will
be the opposite of the suggestion above

read at the Sayres site. other items include that there are now glues
that improve the performance of sheetrock, both for isolation and
acoustics. you'll want a couple of screwed and glued layers installed
according to instructions you'll find at Sayres or other sites.
hit Ethan Winer's site for directions about building your own bass traps
and absorbers.

The thought (from anyone worth listening to) is that there
are people who have studied these things quite thoroughly
and the work that they're willing to share is worth
studying. The most important thing you can get out of
digesting this material (Ethan Winer has some good tips and
explanations as well on his http://www.realtraps.com web
site) is that there isn't a single cookbook solution to
every room. There are tools and materials, and a certain
amount of expertise and experimentation is necessary to get
the best performance.

Lots of useful information there. Don't just wallpaper the whole thing in
auralex. That's a bit like custom building a fancy guitar out of all the
best materials, and then, as an afterthought, tuning all the strings to
exactly the same pitch...
I'm not an expert like some here. I know what I know, and I know what I
don't know. The danger occurs when I don't know what I don't know. I've
wasted lots of money that way.

Mike Rivers gave you good advice with a link to my company's web site.
In particular, these short articles are easy to digest:
Acoustic Basics:
http://www.realtraps.com/art_basics.htm
How to set up a room:
http://www.realtraps.com/art_room-setup.htm
There's tons more acoustics info here if you care:
http://www.realtraps.com/articles.htm
http://www.realtraps.com/videos.htm
(And Mike, thanks very much for the nice mention of my Mixer To DAW
article in this month's Recording magazine.)

You're welcome. I think that article was written more than a
year ago. I forgot about it until I saw that issue.
