NPR's Fresh Air reran a fascinating 25 year old Terri Gross interview of him today.
It's probably available at NPR.org.

I remember an appearance he made on the Tonight Show in the early
1970s (Carson era), where someone (perhaps Johnny or Doc) was talking
about the rhythmic smoothness of his playing. Shearing replied, "You
mean like this?" and unleashed a mind-boggling 30 seconds of time-
changes in every possible meter. It left the audience roaring, and the
band members slack-jawed.
