here's a typical ad:

"All styles of Electronic songs; must be broadcast quality and
contain no uncleared samples. If selected, you will be asked
to supply the stem files so that the songs can be formatted for
the game - only submit songs that you can deliver stem files for. "

Stem files are the submixes for each group of instruments or voices that
constitute the mix.

Think of setting up a console for a mixdown and using stereo submasters
to group like signals - background voices, horns, drums/percussion,
keyboards, guitars, strings, etc. Stems would be the stereo files
recorded from the submasters.

Same thing when using a DAW.

In the film sound world it is conventional for folks to deliver a rough
full mix and then a bunch of stem files which consist of submixes
(all music / all effects / all dialogue / all background speech and wallas)
that can be put together to make the full mix.

I haven't seen this in the music world but I can see if folks are doing
something that will go into a game that it might be critical to provide
the mix in pieces.

Stems are not limited to sub-mixes.

They also encompass single tracks from a multi-track recording, , such as
"lead vox", "gtr 1" "bass" etc etc

LOL! That's total bull****.

Unless you're telling us that when someone like Bowie or Peter Gabriel
release "stems" for their fans to do remixes they're actually releasing sub
mixes.

****, even hip sequencing programs like Reaper offer the option to "render
to stems".

And of course, they are.......*drum roll*............*single tracks*.
