Attention! Attention!
I'm in search of a Sony ECM-51, but NOT on eBay 'cause they're way too expensive on eBay. I'm looking for one that I can afford with ease.

The ECM-51 is a problematic tool. If you need something that looks
similar, I can give you an ECM-50 that you could mount at the end of a
tube. I've often thought a PlexiGlas rod would look great.

Well, right now I have one of that, but now I'm looking for the REAL deal.
I bought an ECM-50 on eBay in December 2007 and turned it into a fake ECM-51 http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/tpirman1982/IMG_0037a.jpg
But now I'm trying to hunt down the REAL deal 'cause the replica does not have the telescopic capability, and the wire looks silly with that bulge near the XLR battery pack because I had to cut the wire, feed it through the metal pipe and splice it back together with electrical tape.

There are two basic problems here:
1. There really weren't a lot of these things made, so they are pretty rare
all things considered.
2. The Sony electrets are all leaky, so if you DO find one, the output will
be very low. Shure had the process down; an SM-81 from 1972 will only be
something like 3dB down from the nominal level. But an ECM-51 or ECM-52
will be way down.

My suggestion is that you buy a Tram or Beyerdynamic lav mike, then you
get some 1/8" thinwall brass tubing from onlinemetals.com, and you do a
little cut and paste work. Should not be hard to make something that sounds
a lot better than the ECM-51 ever did with a couple hours of soldering and
gluing at the kitchen table.

Skip the electrical tape. Cut the cable, then take the cover off the battery
pack, and resolder the cable right into the pack to shorten it. You should
not need to splice the wire at any point.
Get a replacement TV antenna or a pointer and take two or three sections of
it and make yourself a telescoping arrangement if that is important to you.

I'm still in search for a Sony ECM-51.
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/tpirman1982/sonyecm51b.jpg
My price range now stands at $400.
An eBay auction ended last night for one and I was the only bidder until the last second. I bid $400 and $405 beat me at the final second in a sucker-punch.
Any help? contact me at

Hi tpirman.....I saw your post looking for a Sony ECM 51, Thought you might be interested in a Sony ECM 41, which I have up on ebay now (item #260857536718 ). I believe it's the same mic but runs on a regular AA battery.
Thanks .........Judy
