View Full Version : Thought this fool-around project came out pretty well - amateurcollaborating with big-name artist

A talented singer I'm familiar with from a karaoke site recently put
up a version of "Born To Fly" that I thought was really good, and I
got the idea to try something.

Recorded the karaoke track with "What U Hear" as well as my friend's
performance. Isolated Sara Evans' vocal from the original track using
the Extraboy vst plugin and matched it to the karaoke track, put her
on the left and put my friend on the R by matching her performance
which uses the same track, had them trade off phrases and sing
together on the chorus. Also created an isolated version of my
friend's vocal to boost her overall level, did various tweaks with EQ,
compression, reverb to both parts. I replaced the drum intro on the
karaoke track with the better sounding one from the album. Also added
some "hallelujah" hand claps.

Certainly there are sonic shortcomings with her mic but I think her
performance stands up pretty amazingly given the extreme disparity of
how they were recorded - Sara's of course done in a big-dollar studio
and all that encompasses - my friend's done in one take using some pos
boxmart headset mic. Didn't touch her part with pitch correction
except for one spot where the karaoke site flash conversion borked the
pitch which I've noticed sometimes happens. This is a mother of 6 who
does this for relaxation, has never sung professionally.

Lots of talent out there besides those signed with labels.
