I realize that it was heavily posted, but the Gershwin Award Show last night
on PBS was the best-sounding music in recent memory. Considering that Geoff
Emerick was involved, not a big surprise. Still, it was wonderful to listen
to.

I thought Elvis Costello's guitar sounded dreadful, but then
it probably really sounds that way. The piccolo trumpet made
up for it, though. In the end, it's the music that counts
the most.

Considering how everything else sounded, I'm guessing that was faithful

I thought that all of the acoustic guitars sounded terrible. Very high
degree of quacky piezo pickup sound. They should install the new LR
Baggs Anthem pickup system, the best that I've heard.

P.S. I did think that the other aspects of the sound was great, as was
the music.

P.P.S. Paul is not sounding good. I don't know if it vocal strain from
his tour or a cold, or if he has lost a step. I have someone I can ask
about that, so I may make a call.

For a fraction of the cost and complexity a K&K PWM will fix that, too.
Add a Red-Eye and it's home run time.

Thank you.
But on a quick-change show like that, pickups are the norm,
and they take whatever the player brings along. It's too
bad, though, that the players haven't figured it out and if
nothing else, had a "TV guitar" with a pickup that makes it
sound like a guitar. But in a world where pickups are
getting better, those that the "big public" hear seem to be
getting worse. Emmy Lou's didn't sound too bad, but then
she's always had a very acoustic show.
At the White House, I'll bet they don't spend a lot of time
doing sound checks for security reasons. It's probably
possible, given enough time, to pull out an acceptable sound
from the scratchings that go in - I've managed to do it
myself some of the time, given a few songs in a set to fool
with the equalizer. A modern digital console (which I'm
pretty sure they were using, just on general principles)
lets you save the EQ settings as a scene, and because the
pickup is consistent, if you got a good sound out of it
during sound check, you should get the same sound for the show.
But to be fair, it's easy to mix a guitar that sounds like
crap. You hear a few strums to give the impression that
there's a guitar in the mix, and then it gets buried (and
often, simply not played). On a wham-bam show like that one

Jenn, ditto here. I have a Martin with a Fishman pre-Aura pickup,
and the K&K (installed in another guitar) is significantly better
sounding. The Fishman does have better gain before feedback properties
than the K&K, especially when an electric guitar amp is in play.

Oh, I understand that very well. When I suggested installing a new PU,
I was referring to the players, not the sound guys.

Hey Hank,
Price-wise, the Anthem SL is only a few bucks more than the K&K. I know
that there are many fans of the K&K, and I think that it does sound
pretty good, but I've never been able to get a SBT to sound just like I
like. I best like the sound of some internal mic in the mix, and the
Anthem is the best off-the-shelf example of this that I've encountered,
hands down.

Whatever works is cool, and I'm glad you have found a system that works
well for you.
K & K Pure Mini MSRP: $123
Baggs Anthem MSRP: $289
My K&K's cost about a hundred bucks, installed.
If I generally played solo acoustic without monitors I might better
appreciate in-guitar mics, even though the sound inside a guitar is not
what I want to hear when I hear an acoustic guitar. I would personally
choose a good external mic in most settings, and especially when I'm
playing where vocals and other instruments will come back at me from
floor monitors. I can position an external directional mic to reject
some of the ambient sound.
I also dislike having "extra stuff" in or on my guitar, like a battery,
or those little finger-wheel volume controls hooked to the edge of a
soundhole.
Batteries need replacing, usually at inconvenient times, and they
sometimes come loose inside an instrument when one check's such as
airline baggage.
I just like to keep it as simple as possible.

The Anthem mentioned above is the LR Baggs Anthem-SL Dual Source
Acoustic Microphone System.
I see there's another one called the LR Baggs Anthem Acoustic Microphone
with an MSRP of $429. That one allows adjusting the relative levels of
the mic and pickup.

The Anthem SL (the one with just a volume control, sells for $199, less
of course if you have a "relationship" with them.

The Anthem simply sounds more like my unamplified instruments than
anything I've heard. And short of turning the gain on an amp WAY up and
holding the guitar right up to the speaker, I can't get it to feed back.

I agree, and would rather have no controls at all. What I do is mount
the little wheel way up above the soundhole so it's not seen at all.

I've never had to change mine more than once a year; it's set on my

People get used to it and like it. Don't ask me why. I did a PA gig for
a festival not too long ago where I stuck a parametric on the guitar and
notched the worst two quack modes out... the guitarist's husband was
incensed that it didn't have "her sound" anymore.

It's sad how crappy acoustic guitars sound with pickups, or even
internal mics.
Put a decent condenser or ribbon out in front - use a pickup if you must
for the monitor, but the ONLY was a fine acoustic guitar will sound
good is... acoustically!!

Actually things have progressed considerably. Unfortunately many folks
who play acoustic guitars with piezo pickups are conditioned to think
that's how the rig is supposed to sound and expend no additional energy
or money to discover differently.
My main guitar doesn't sound via the K&K + Red-Eye like it does through
a Schoeps, but it sounds remarkably natural, has none of the quack that
I can perceive, and suffers mainly because pickups don't enjoy the
effect of the air on sound transmission. But it sounds very good and
sometimes using the pickup is the only practical solution, depending on
venue, sound system, and operator.

Silly question: Why was there a giant piece of black tape over the word
"Hohner" on Stevie's clavinet?

He may endorse another brand.

Maybe because it didn't look good on stage. Or maybe he got
****ed at the company. Bill Monroe sent his mandolin back to
Gibson for a repair and was unhappy with the way it came
back, so he took his pocket knife and dug out the Gibson
name on the peghead. Eventually he made peace with the
company and they were happy to put it back for him.

I couldn't agree more, Hank.

Not likely. But covering the brand name is common practice in a couple
of situations - where the player endorses another brand, or where a
company doesn't provide endorsement level support for a famous artist,
and the artist refuses to allow the appearance of an endorsement.
This can reach ridiculous levels, such as removing all the labels from a
brand of bottled water for something like a Stones concert.

People do that all the time for various endorsement or spite reasons. Or
mebbe the shark* told 'em to.

Mebbe he thought: I paid for this instrument, I didn't get paid for
advertizing space in my show.

Dunno, what constitutes a "fair size" manufacturers namebadge sure has
changed from those concert grands where you have to open the lid and look on
the frame. There was a time when the keyboard operator was the star, now the
instruments try to get that position with the operator secondary.
